The Fantle Memorial Park swimming pool looks good on the
surface with less than a month
left to the summer swim season.
But the realities of aging make
the structural failure of the current facility a prospect that local officials must face. Though
groups such as Dive In Yankton
are looking to drum up support
for a proposed aquatics facility,
the city is doing its best to make
sure the present pool remains
open to patrons.

A state regulatory panel agreed
to wait until September 4 to
decide whether to suspend
the grain-buyer license for the
company of a prominent Yankton businessman. Ralph Marquardt told the South Dakota
Public Utilities Commission he
or brother John Marquardt
would take responsibility for
all decisions going forward at
Utica Grain Inc. The company
does business as Upper Midwest Grain Elevator with locations at Utica, Irene, Meckling
and Tabor. State law requires a
$100,000 cushion for a Class
A grain-buyer license. Class B
licenses are more restrictive and
require payment to producers in
30 days. Company officials said
they remained about $11,000
short of the $100,000 cushion
Friday. Ralph Marquardt had
$284,941.28 put in the checking account Thursday. No one
alleged a producer wasn’t paid.

dominated the field, winning the
event by five minutes over the

Tuesday
against suspending the grain

guaranteed any producer would
be made financially whole. The
company has locations at Irene,

Yankton High School’s FFA
chapter and one of Stewart Elementary School’s fifth-grade
classes gathered peppers and
tomatoes from the garden FFA
had made at Stewart. Produce
from the garden was donated to
the Contact Center and Food for
Thought. Earlier this spring, FFA
teacher/advisor Brandon Wagner was thinking of a project the
group could do with a state grant
when the prospect of planting a
vegetable garden came up. Deciding it would be a good idea
to get elementary-aged students involved; Wagner reached
out to a few area elementary
schools about providing space
for a garden to be built. Stewart Elementary School Principal
Jerome Klimisch jumped at the
possibility. “I had read an article
about having agriculture in the
classroom and how important it
was for kids to know where their
food comes from,” he said.
