occupied by the Yankton Youth
Soccer Association on the former Human Services Center
campus, but soccer officials
have formulated plans for fundraising and what they’re looking
for in a new soccer complex. Organizers brought those plans to
the Yankton City Commission for
a work session to present board
members with a vision of the future of youth soccer.

A petition asking South Dakota’s congressional delegation
to work to keep the Yankton
Federal Prison Camp (YFPC)
open has gathered more than
2,300 signatures. After penning an open letter to U.S. Rep.
Kristi Noem (R) and circulating a petition at various events

Chamber of Commerce Director
Carmen Schramm told the Press
& Dakotan that the petition contained 2,279 signatures before
be¬ing taken to Sioux Falls Friday morning.

3 People were killed Saturday
morning in a two-vehicle crash
south of Parkston. According to
a press release from the South
Dakota Department of Public
Safety (DPS), a 2006 Chevrolet Impala was northbound on
South Dakota Highway 37 when
the driver lost control on the icecovered road. The vehicle went
across the center line and collided with a southbound 2016
Peterbilt semi-truck. Pronounced
dead at the scene were all three
of the car’s occupants — the
16-year-old male driver and
two passengers, a 49-year-old
male and 48-year-old female.
All three were wearing seatbelts.
The male semi-truck driver, 77,
was not injured. He was wearing a seatbelt. South Dakota’s
Highway Patrol is investigating
the crash.

spent the past three seasons as

Almost nine months after the
fatal accident, a Cedar County,
Neb., official is seeking a grand
jury to consider charges in the
death of a Yankton woman. Cedar County Attorney Ed Matney
told the Press & Dakotan he has
filed an application to convene a
grand jury in the June 29 death
of 21-year-old Jessi Anderson.
She died in an all-terrain vehicle
(ATV) accident near Fordyce,
Neb., in northern Cedar County.

A dead body was found in downtown Yankton yesterday afternoon. Yankton police chief Brian
Paulsen told the Press & Dakotan that a body was found between two buildings in the 100
block of W. 3rd St. around 2 p.m.
Monday. “There was a body — it
looks like a male from above —
stuck down between two buildings,” Paulsen said. According
to a Yankton Police Department
(YPD) press release sent to the
Press & Dakotan Monday evening, it is believed the body had
been at this location for an extended period of time.
Mount Marty College named

and women’s golf coach this
week. Wagner will also serve
as an assistant women’s basketball coach, filling both roles
previously held by new MMC
women’s basketball coach Todd
Schlimgen. Schlimgen was happy to have one of his former athletes back as both his assistant

Comic books are a billion-dollar
industry, and when Yankton native David Stibral was presented
with the opportunity to bring
comics to his furniture store,
David’s Depot, he jumped on it.
“As I started up the store, it was
always about everything furniture, collectibles and household
needs, so it was part of the
package from the beginning,”
Stibral said. “The comic books
were something that we found
and, as the opportunity came,
we jumped on it.” Stibral’s brother was travelling on the East
Coast and found a comic book
store that was closing. So the
brothers bought a share of the
store’s inventory and now have
around 11,000 books, some of
which are still being shipped to
them.
Dona (Ray) Reed was inducted
into the South Dakota High
School Basketball Hall of Fame
March 24 in Sioux Falls. Reed
is a 1978 graduate of Yankton
High School she also went on to
play at Yankton College.

A positive identification has
been made on a body that was
found in downtown Yankton
Monday. Following an autopsy
Wednesday, the victim was
identified as 39-year-old David
Courtney, according to a press
release from the Yankton Police
Department. The preliminary
cause of death was determined
to be positional asphyxiation,
and no foul play is suspected
at this time. Courtney’s body
was discovered in a 9-inch gap
between two buildings in the
100 block of W. 3rd St. it was
determined he’d been there for
at least a couple of months.

Charlie’s Pizza House in Yankton
has done it again. For the third
time, Charlie’s spicy meatball
and sauerkraut pizza has been
named by the Food Network
as the best pizza in South Dakota called “The Festus,” in the
netw¬ork’s annual “50 States,

won it in 2011 and 2015, this is

Federal agents on Monday raided the office of President Donald Trump’s personal attorney
Michael Cohen, seizing records
on topics including a $130,000
payment made to porn actress
Stormy Daniels. A furious Trump,
who in the last month has escalated his attacks on Robert

it was a “disgrace” that the FBI
“broke into” his lawyer’s office.

A cash seizure last week connected to an ongoing drug investigation in Yankton County
may be the largest such seizure
in the county’s history. According

result of a previous investigation,
law enforcement has seized an
additional $445,220 in an ongoing fentanyl distribution case.

A Yankton man has pleaded not
guilty to accusations he provided false information in connection to a fatal ATV accident that
occurred last summer. According to a press release issued
by the Cedar County Attorney’s
Office, Derrik John Nelson, 26,
appeared in court in Hartington, Nebraska, and Wednesday
where he pleaded not guilty to a
single charge of false reporting
to a peace officer.

Miles Krajewski, 12, of Yankton
has become a top global competitor in badminton and hopes
to qualify for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Two years
ago, Krajewski won a singles title
at the Pan Am Para-Badminton
Championships in Colombia.
Jerry Weber, a clinical social
worker in Yankton and a former city commissioner, is set
to become a chaplain with the
Yankton Fire Department this
summer. The Rev. Rod Veldhuizen had served in the role for
the a little more than a decade.
He and his wife, Deb, are leaving
Yankton to open a new ministry
in Custer in June.

Yankton’s United Church of
Christ is celebrating its 150th
anniversary with a special service, program and other events
this Sunday. The church was
founded in Yankton in April
1868, and a site for its first permanent church was purchased
a year later. The first church
structure (right) was dedicated
in 1870.

It’s moving day for the Dakota
Territorial Museum. The first pallets of catalogued and packed
historical material began moving from the museum Monday
and were trucked up to the
museum’s future home in the
Mead Building. Bentley Moving
of Yankton is handling the haul.
The Mead Building is expected
to open later this year, and the
overall moving process will take
many months.

The chief financial officer of the
University of South Dakota will
become the institution’s new
president on June 22. The South
Dakota Board of Regents voted
unanimously Tuesday to name
Sheila Gestring, vice president
of finance and chief financial officer at USD, as the university’s
new leader.
Two Yankton men surrendered
to Cedar County, Nebraska,
authorities late Monday afternoon in connection with the ATV
death of a Yankton woman. The
June 2017 crash near Fordyce,
Nebraska, claimed the life of
21-year-old Jessi Anderson, according to authorities. Anderson
was attending South Dakota
State University at the time of
her death. Derrik J. Nelson faces six charges, including a felony
charge of motor vehi¬cle homicide. The 26-year-old Nelson is
charged with driving the ATV at
the time of the crash, in which
Anderson alleg¬edly was thrown
from the vehicle at an intersection which resulted in her death.
Derrik Nelson’s father, 64-yearold J. Douglas Nelson, faces a
misdemeanor charge of being
an accessory to a felony. He is
charged with disassembling the
ATV after the crash. The Nelsons were booked at the Cedar
County Jail, posted bond and
are scheduled for a May 14 arraignment, according to a press
release from Cedar County Attorney Ed Matney.
A longtime Yankton School District principal recently received
much-deserved recognition. Lincoln Elementary School Principal Paul Struck was nominated
for Distinguished Elementary
Principal of South Dakota. The
award ultimately went to Howard
Elementary Principal Dr. Chris
Noid. Struck’s nominator, Beadle Elementary School Principal Carey Mitzel, had previously
taught at Lincoln under Struck
and was mentored by him during his principalship.
A Yankton Police Department
member has received recognition for his role in capturing one
of the nation’s highly sought
criminals. Lt. Todd Brandt has
received the Chief John Wainman Sr. Service Award. He was
honored for his role in the June
2017 apprehension of Lyle
Jeffs, a fugitive on the FBI's Most
Wanted List, near Yankton. Jeffs
was captured at Lewis and Clark
Marina. His arrest ended a yearlong manhunt for him.

Four people have been detained
following a suicide that occurred
in Yankton Wednesday morning.
According to a press release
from Yankton police Chief Brian
Paulsen, the Yankton Police Department received a 911 call
at 2:40 a.m. Wednesday advising of a self-inflicted gunshot
wound. A 17-year-old female
was transported to Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, where she
was pronounced dead. An autopsy has been completed and
the gun recovered. According
to the release, four individuals
Logan Winder, 20, Logan Huber,
19, Andrew Johnson, 18, and a
17-year-old female have been
detained and will face “ancillary charges” in connection with
the incident. The investigation is
ongoing.

have been arrested in connection to the case of a 17-year-old
female who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday.
Those arrested were: Andrew
Johnson, 18, Yankton, was arrested Wednesday for possession/receiving of stolen property
($100-$400), accessory (harboring or concealing), inhabiting a room where a controlled
substance is used or stored,
and possession of a controlled
substance and unauthorized
ingestion of a controlled drug
or substance. Logan Winder,

concealing), and second-degree
burglary.
