South Dakota State Historical Society
Participates In May Day Activities
PIERRE, S.D. -- Every year on May 1 – May Day – the
South Dakota State Historical Society encourages historical
societies, archives, museums and libraries to spend some
time preparing their organization in the event of a disaster.
The day is meant to remind heritage organizations to
be prepared for a disaster and to take the initiative to plan
some activities that may help their organizations in the
event of an emergency. If an organization needs assistance
with preparing an emergency preparedness plan they are
encouraged to contact the State Historical Society-Archives
at 605-773-3804 or archref@state.sd.us.
“Preparing an emergency preparedness plan or training
staff to respond to different scenarios may seem daunting,
but dedicating a little time on May 1 may make a difference
if an emergency does happen,” said Chelle (pronounced
SHELL-ee) Somsen, South Dakota state archivist. “Examples
VERMILLION, S.D. - The South Dakota Department of Transportation has closed the Interstate 29 Homestead rest area
near Vermillion Exit 26 for the reconstruction of the rest area
and welcome center.
Officials expect the new rest area and welcome center to
open by April 2019.
JLG Architects is the designer and Beckenhauer Construction, Inc. is the prime contractor on this $3.7 million rest area
reconstruction project.

of activities that can be done on May Day include updating the contact list for staff, checking to make sure the fire
extinguishers and smoke detectors are working, surveying
the building for risks or conducting a disaster drill.”
On May Day, the State Archives staff will update their response plans and check the batteries on their flashlights to
ensure they are working correctly. State Historical Society
staff are updating the emergency preparedness plan to correct any outdated information.
“These are actions that we can take without the whole
process becoming overwhelming,” Somsen said.
For more information, contact the State Historical Society-Archives at 605-773-3804 or archref@state.sd.us. State
Archives hours are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. CDT Monday-Friday and
the first Saturday of most months.
Gov. Daugaard Touts Early Results Of
New Grants For Grads Housing Program
PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard
today released early results of the recently launched South
Dakota Housing Development Authority Grants for Grads
program, which aims to assist recent graduates in purchasing their first home in South Dakota.
In the first three months of the program’s existence, 97
new homeowners have taken advantage of the program, a
result that the Governor has touted as highly encouraging.
“We’re thrilled with the initial response and look forward
to more recent graduates choosing to stay in the state or
move here with this program,” Gov. Daugaard said. “There
are so many reasons to settle down in South Dakota, and
receiving support for your dream homebuying experience is
just one of the many.”
The “Grants for Grads” program launched at the beginning of 2018 and is open to first-time homebuyers who:
•Meet certain income requirements
•Are purchasing a primary residence in South Dakota
•Have not owned a home in the past three years
•Select a home with a purchase price of $250,200 or less
•Have earned an accredited associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree within the past 60 months.
Grants for Grads is available for a limited time through
participating lenders, with per-beneficiary assistance at
five percent of the loan amount. In order to apply for the
program, participants must contact a lender to schedule an
appointment.
