Heartland Humane Society
Carson
Heartland Humane Society’s grass root efforts began in 2001.
The shelter serves Yankton and 14 surrounding counties,
helping with stray and unwanted animals, community
programming, and volunteer opportunities.
This past May, HHS finished it’s three-year, 8,000 square foot
remodel of a former car dealership and opened its first “fullyfunctional” facility. Today, the shelter can hold up to 65 animals
at one time and plans to rescue over 600 animals in 2018.
Community programming includes pet therapy and education
in our hospitals, schools and businesses; a food pantry serving
pet owners in financial crisis, vaccination clinics for owners,
and Trap-Neuter-Release efforts in our communities.
