South Dakota’s Average Teacher
Salary Increases 8.8 Percent
M I S S O U R I VA L L E Y
M I S S O U R I VA L L E Y
PIERRE, S.D. – Average teacher salary
in South Dakota is on track to meeting a
statewide target average of $48,500, which
legislators adopted in 2016 as a part of
the Blue Ribbon education funding package.
Average teacher salary in Fiscal Year
2017 was $45,625. That represents an
increase of 8.8 percent from Fiscal Year
2016, when the average was $41,940.
Several districts, including Wall, GayvilleVolin and Mobridge-Pollock, saw increases of more than 20 percent, with Leola
nearing a 30 percent increase.
“This is good news,” said Gov. Dennis
Daugaard. “We knew that it would take
some time to meet the target salary goal,
and schools are making great progress in
that direction already. I’m confident this
upward trend will continue in the years to
come.”
“Beyond the data, I have heard anecdo-
tally from a number of educators that the
increase in teacher salaries has boosted
morale,” said Secretary of Education Dr.
Melody Schopp.
Schopp also noted that, while the
funding increase for teacher salaries was
a highlight of the Blue Ribbon package,
there were other critical components
aimed at improving teacher recruitment
and retention. One of these components
was funding for a statewide program for
mentoring teachers new to the profession.
For school year 2017-18, the program
is serving 356 new teachers in districts
across the state – with 279 veteran teachers providing guidance and support to
their less-experienced colleagues.
Teacher compensation data for FY17,
by school district, will be available Friday
on the Department of Education’s School
Finance Accountability Board webpage.

Wait to Treat
Ash Trees
for Emerald
Ash Borer
by SDSU iGrow
BROOKINGS, S.D. - It's too
early for South Dakotans to
begin treating their ash trees
for emerald ash borer said
John Ball, Professor & SDSU
Extension Forestry Specialist.
"Our recommendation,
consistent with other states,
is not to begin treatments
until the insect has been
confirmed within 15 miles of
your trees" Ball said. "There
are companies already going around communities in
eastern South Dakota telling
people to start treatments
now, but this is premature."
The reason? Ball explained that emerald ash
borer was recently confirmed
near Welcome, Minnesota
and this confirmation, along
with the confirmation in Alta,
Iowa earlier this summer,
mean the insect is still 100
miles from South Dakota.
The emerald ash borer
was accidentally introduced
from Asia into Michigan in
the late 1990s. It is responsible for the loss of more than
50 million ash trees in this
country. None of our native
ash species; black, blue,
green or white; have shown
resistance to this insect.
"Treatments are now so
effective that you can even
save trees that have been
infested for a few years so
there is no need start pesticide treatments now," Ball
said.
Ball recommends waiting
until emerald ash borer is
found in your area and then
decide based on cost which
ash to treat.
The average cost of treatment is around $80 to $120
a tree. Treatments are done
every other year.
"These treatments do
work," Ball said. "Today, the
only ash trees left in more
eastern communities impacted by emerald ash borer
epidemics are those that
have been treated."
