Duke and Peggy Ellingson Set
To Serve As Captain And Belle
This year’s Riverboat Days (RBD) Captain and Belle are ready for duty.
Duke and Peggy Ellingson are looking forward to taking part in this
year’s festivities Aug. 18-20. Both are involved in the community and see
taking part in RBD as another way to give back.
A lifelong Yankton resident, Duke is an employee with Larry’s Heating
& Cooling. In his free time, he teaches Sunday School at Yankton’s United
Church of Christ, volunteers at Beadle Elementary School and Habitat for
Humanity, and serves on the Federal Prison Camp board.
Peggy is a retired special education teacher who volunteers with
Meals on Wheels and the Sack Pack program and serves on several
committees at the United Church of Christ.
They were approached back in March about being RBD Captain and
Belle by Yankton City Commissioner Jake Hoffner, who visited them
under the pretense of wanting to discuss the new city pool with Duke.
“He hemmed and hawed for almost an hour and I thought, something
wasn’t right,” Peggy recalled.
“He said, ‘We’re not here to talk about the pool. We want you to be
Captain and Belle,’” Duke added.
They were both surprised by the offer.
“I know there are a lot of people in the community who do a lot more
than we do,” Peggy said. “I was humbled by their choice. Jake said,
‘There’s a lot of good people out there, but it’s your turn, so enjoy it.’”
They will, once their Captain and Belle duties officially kick off in June
with their participation in riding in area parades.
They have already begun promoting RBD, Duke in particular. When
he went in to volunteer at Beadle Monday, he wore his Captain hat and
passed around buttons with this year’s theme: “Tank Tops N’ Flip Flops.”
While they are looking forward to doing everything the RBD
committee asks them to do – like judging the Classic Cruiser’s Car Show
and riding around in a golf cart greeting people – Duke said he wants to
opt out of traditional riverboat float the Captain and Belle ride on for the
RBD parade and instead have his beloved Batmobile be the vehicle to
open the show.
Until then, they have the warm reception from the community to
enjoy.
“People you see at the store and church have said nice things and
we’ve gotten letters in the mail congratulating us,” Duke said. “It’s nice to
get that reinforcement.”
