Mickelson started a new tradition in South Dakota called “Capital for a Day.” Gov. Mickelson would travel to a community and issue an executive proclamation declaring that town as South Dakota’s Capital for a Day. He would spend the day touring the town, talking with people of the community and getting input from local leaders. When I took office, I decided to continue the Capital for a Day tradition because it gives me the opportunity to hear from South Dakotans. Now that warmer weather isn’t too far away, I am extending an invitation to communities across the state to apply. Activities for the day typically include a main street walk, business tours and a community social. We also hold roundtable meetings with community leaders to discuss prominent local issues. I typically give an update on state government and learn from local citizens what they think. Since 2011, Capital for a Day has been hosted by Mitchell, Canton, Onida, Volga, Hill City, Britton, De Smet, Viborg, Aberdeen, Lead-Deadwood, Flandreau, Wall, Parkston, Faulkton, Wessington Springs, Milbank, Kimball, Madison, Spearfish, Lake Norden, Lemmon and Yankton. We often talk about how Washington, D.C., can be like an island. The federal government at times seems to lack common sense, and sometimes national officials forget their roots. Well, I don’t want Pierre to be that way. I don’t want state government to be isolated from South Dakotans or oblivious to local situations. That’s why events like this are so important. In order to be of, by and for the people, we must take the time to listen. We need to hear about problems that exist and better understand the impact government decisions are having on people’s lives. If your town has never been Capital for a Day, I hope you will urge your local leaders to apply. Interested communities can find out more by going to sd.gov/governor and clicking on “Initiatives.” Statement From Gov. Daugaard On Keystone XL PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard issued the following statement today in response to the State Department’s issuance of a permit for construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline. “I welcome the administration’s approval of the Keystone XL Pipeline. This is a victory for all of us who rely on oil to heat our homes, fuel our cars, and power our tractors, and pipelines are the safest and most efficient way to transport oil. I recognize that some South Dakotans will not celebrate this news, and I respect that perspective. I hope we will all seek to exercise our First Amendment rights peacefully, and respect the right of others to do likewise.” Snap Up a Deal in the Classifieds Call or go online to browse, buy or sell! With summer travel just around the corner, now is the time many families and individuals are looking for ways to save money on air travel. Here’s AAA’s best tips: • Book early. Air carriers want to fill every seat on the plane. They base their rates on supply and demand. Prices will be higher on flights with few available seats. Conversely, when empty seats are in high supply, the prices are adjusted to entice travelers to book. • Shop on a Monday or Tuesday, between midnight and 5 a.m. Any flights – booked during the day that are not paid in full – are released at midnight, a time when most people are sleeping. This means more seat availability, reduced demand and cheaper airfares. • Delete computer cookies. If you check an air carrier’s website multiple times a day and notice the price of the same flight has increased, try deleting your computer cookies. Otherwise, the website may remember that you visited before and might not show the lowest price available. • Travel during offpeak times. Airfares are often much cheaper for early morning or late-night flights. Since these times are inconvenient for many travelers, fares tend to be cheaper. • Get quotes from regional airports. Regional airports often offer cheaper flights than international airports. • Bundle. Travelers can find incentive pricing when booking their airfare together with a hotel and/ or rental car. • Use a travel agent. Take advantage of the expertise of a qualified travel agent to help save time and money. Busiest Days to Travel • Friday, Sunday, and Monday (Domestic): Heavier traffic days with Americans departing or returning from business trips or extended weekends. • Weekends (International): The majority of international travelers start their vacations on a weekend. If you are going on an international flight, be sure your passport is up to date. If your passport is set to expire within six months of your return date, you will not be permitted to board the plane. Also, consult with a travel agent to learn more about visa and immunization requirements at your destination. The free AAA mobile app allows travelers to book a hotel or rental car; find travel guides, vacation ideas, deals, driving tips, and locate a AAA travel agent. Visit AAA. com/mobile. USD Students Research Clay County Fallen Heroes VERMILLION, S.D. – University of South Dakota School of Education students will present research findings to representatives of the Vermillion Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3061 and American Legion for a project called “Clay County’s Fallen” on Wednesday, March 29. The project, sponsored by the Vermillion VFW 3061, involved 20 students in 7-12 Social Science Methods researching and writing a biography about the life of a fallen veteran from Clay County. Students researched fallen heroes from the World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War eras. “I can tell the students are connected with their fallen hero and are inspired by this project which they hope to implement into their future classrooms,” said Jing Williams, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction. The top five presentations will win a cash prize. The first place winner will be invited to speak at the Memorial Day Observance in Vermillion on May 29. All participating students will be invited to attend the ceremony. Interested in INTERESTED IN THIS SPOT? this spot? MV Shopper Call 665-5884 to place your ad here.
