I want to keep one and use the bill-pay option for monthly stuff like utilities, so we can keep earning rewards points. I look at my way as a method of just re-routing the money and paying it off each month. Am I wrong in looking at it like this? Cheryl Dear Cheryl, Yes, you are. Life never goes as planned. You can have all the well-reasoned and best-intentioned ideas you want, but sooner or later something will go wrong. Why not use a debit card that has a rewards system attached? Lots of debit card programs offer the same kinds of rewards programs that credit card companies do, with one big exception — you don’t have to go into debt! Studies have shown that the vast majority of people never redeem their credit card airline miles. Other studies show that people spend more when using credit cards as opposed to cash. That extra money you spend on things you don’t need is money you could have been saving and investing. So, where’s the reward? — Dave Dave RAMSEY original creditor accept the agreement, too, if we accept one of the collection agency’s options? Anonymous Dear Anonymous, In most situations of this type, the collection agency owns the debt outright or they’re directly representing the original creditor. It’s pretty much standard operating procedure when someone has defaulted on a loan. My advice would be to accept the deal they’ve offered that makes the most sense for you and your current financial situation. It’ll ding your credit report, and show a settlement on the defaulted credit card, but that’s not the end of the world. There’s already a mark against you for it being turned over to collections. If you want to keep things like this from happening in the future, you need to get control of your finances. Collections and Creditors Question Dear Dave, We were very late on one of our credit card bills, and now it has been turned over to a collection agency. The collection company has offered us three or four different payment options. Does the State Reaches Settlement With SDRC, Inc. PIERRE, S.D. – The State of South Dakota announced today it has settled its two pending civil lawsuits with SDRC, Inc. related to the federal EB-5 program and the South Dakota Regional Center for approximately $1.5 million. The lawsuits, initiated in October 2015, sought to enforce the state’s regional center administration contract with SDRC, which required indemnification funds be maintained for the state’s benefit by SDRC, Inc., as well as to recover expenses the Board of Regents incurred in connection with a California arbitration case. “Since 2013, the State of South Dakota has worked diligently to resolve the problems stemming from the federal EB-5 program in South Dakota,” said Tony Venhuizen, the Governor’s chief of staff. “Today’s settlement and the recovery of $1.5 million from SDRC, Inc. not only compensates the state for past EB-5 related expenses, but also ensures the state has the funds it would otherwise have had under the contract with SDRC, Inc. to guard against any future claims.” Under the terms of the settlement, SDRC will immediately pay $546,250 into an existing state-controlled indemnification account, with an additional $81,250 payment by Sept. 1, 2019. Since commencing its civil actions, the state separately recovered an additional $894,633.32 in indemnification funds owed to the state by SDRC, Inc. The state remains a party to a lawsuit in Hughes County brought against SDRC, Inc. and the state by investors in the former Northern Beef Packers project. The state’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit is still pending. There’s something so satisfying about getting out of bed when the world is still dark and quiet and resting. Making the coffee gives us time to scratch and think. Well, scratch, anyway. Most of that thinking will start after about the third cup of coffee. But it’s a quiet time. A private time. When the world is dark, and there isn’t yet a hint of pink over the eastern mountains, life is especially good. We can relax. No one is expecting anything from us right now. Our guilt can take some time off, and we can listen to music or work a crossword puzzle or turn on the TV and watch the weather guy discuss millibars and troughs. Soon enough, we’ll have to be out there living for others: our bosses, our customers, our animals, our fields. But right now no one needs us except the dog, and she does well on kibbles and an ear rumple. We can look out the window at the eastern glow and wonder what will happen in the hours until our world turns dark again. People will be born and people will die. People will win honors and people will go to jail. People will create things today that live past them and people will disappear forever. Some people will write about these things and other people will read about these things. And then the world will go dark on us again and we’ll think about what happened in our tiny portion of this huge moving amalgam and hopefully we’ll sleep easily tonight. Then, when we arise tomorrow and head for the coffee pot, we can think about what happened today, and how it has made us slightly different for taking on the next tomorrow. Come to us, Daylight. Bring us the new day. But do it gently, please, and slowly enough for one more cup. Has HEAT & AC CHEAPER THAN A SIDE BY SIDE Kevin came up to my desk after class. “Professor Howard, may I talk to you?” “Sure,” I answered. “What would you like to talk about?” “I want to wait until everyone else is gone?” he whispered. I nodded, and erased the board and did a few other cleanup tasks as we waited. My class had just finished a test review. I provide questions that the students are to complete and bring to class. They then go over them in groups to make sure they understand everything. Once the other students had vacated the room, I sat on the edge of the desk. “So, Kevin, what can I help you with?” “I’m sorry to keep you after class,” Kevin replied, “but I didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings if they overheard me. I just wanted to say that I just can’t work with my group.” “Personality conflict?” I asked. That was usually the reason students gave for wanting to change groups. It was often caused by a boy and a girl in the group dating and something going wrong in their relationship. Kevin shook his head. “No. It’s just that they’re so stupid I can’t stand it. I know all of the answers, and they don’t get the math at all. They’re no help to me.” “If you know the material, can’t you help them?” I asked. He shook his head. “I don’t work well with stupid people.” I was a little taken aback by all of this. I have had students previously who thought they were too smart to work with others, but I had never had anyone be so blunt about it. “Is there any group you would like to be part of?” I asked. Kevin shook his head. “Frankly, as I listened to all of the groups around me, I realized that they’re all stupid. I would be better off doing it on my own.” I paused at his arrogance, but I have learned that someone who doesn’t want to work with others shouldn’t be forced to—not for the sake of the person, but for the sake of the other group members. It causes too much disharmony. “If that’s how you feel, you don’t have to work with a group on the next review.” He thanked me and left. I shook my head in disbelief. I thought about it a minute, and then noted the names of each member of his group so I could check their scores. A couple of days later, after the test closed, I logged in to check grades. The class average was seventy-four percent. Every one of the other members of Kevin’s group scored even higher, receiving A’s and B’s. I assumed Kevin must have done really well, but when I looked at his grade, I was surprised. He had scored a sixty-two percent. I said nothing to him, but when I announced the class average, I did see Kevin ask his group members how they did. When they responded, his expression was priceless. On the next test, he didn’t work with his group. Once again, the class average was in the seventies, and Kevin’s group members received A’s and B’s. Kevin scored a sixtypercent. He asked me how his group members did, but I couldn’t legally tell him, so he asked them. After class, Kevin came up to see me. “Professor Howard, do you know what I scored on my two tests?” I nodded, so he continued. “I thought it had to be a fluke for my group members to get A’s and B’s when I got a sixty-two. I decided they must have drug me down. But it happened again without them. What should I do?” “I would suggest you study with your group,” I replied. “A smart person knows that he can learn something from everyone.” Kevin nodded, and the next time we did a review, Kevin was actively participating with his group. His test ended up being a B. He stayed after class the next day to talk to me. He just smiled and said six words. “A smart person learns from others.” Kevin had learned something even more important than math.
