NWTF-IA Helps Purchase
120 Acres For Hunting in
Woodbury County, Iowa
The Iowa State
Chapter of the National
Wild Turkey Federation
(NWTF-IA) provided
funding for a 120 acre
addition to the Curtin
Timber Wildlife Area in
Woodbury County. The
County Conservation
Board has had its eye on
this property for nearly
25 years, and was able to
move quickly to purchase
it when it finally became
available. Woodbury
County Conservation
Board Director Rick
Schneider notes, "This is
an exceptional property
and we are very pleased
to add it to our existing
Curtin Timber public
area". The land is nearly
completely forested,
with some of the finest
black walnut and oak
trees found in western
Iowa. This acquisition
will provide exceptional
hunting opportunities,
and balance a continued
loss of forested habitat in
the region.
NWTF-IA funds were
used to match money
from the Iowa DNR
Wildlife Habitat Stamp
Fund, Federal Land and
Water Conservation Fund,
Whitetails Unlimited,
REAP, Woodbury County
Conservation Board,
Pheasants Forever, and a
local foundation. NWTFIA representatives were
recently on hand for a
dedication ceremony at
the property. State Board
member Fred Long remarked, “It is a beautiful
piece of property and I’m
glad we had a hand in securing it”. Adjacent landowners Vickie and Marvin
Buettner were pleased
to see NWTF in attendance. And to top it off,
two bow hunters showed
up during the ceremony
prepared to get out there
and take advantage of the
new place to hunt!
NWTF-IA has made
it a priority to secure
land for hunting in the
state. Since 1988 we have
helped purchase 167
properties totaling 26,939
acres! NWTF-IA has invested $1,463,790 during
this time, and matched
every dollar with $18 in
outside funding. NWTFIA State Chapter President Gary Reeder says,
“It’s important that we
secure places to hunt
if we hope to preserve
