2016 SDSU Friends of the Beef Industry
BROOKINGS, S.D. - Glenham, S.D. ranchers
Allen and Becky Walth were recognized as the
2016 South Dakota State University Friends of
the Beef Industry during the SDSU Beef Bowl
football game in Brookings Sept. 17.
Both SDSU alumni, the Walths were financial
contributors to the new state-of-the-art SDSU
Cow-Calf Education and Research Facility that
was recently built to better enable research,
teaching and extension.
“SDSU gave us the education which has allowed us to build our business from the
ground up,” said Allen. “This is our way of
giving back — to invest in the lives of future
SDSU students.”
Another way the couple is impacting SDSU
students is through the summer internship
program they began offering at their farm in
2015, along with a scholarship for students
pursuing an Animal Science degree. “It’s been
an education for the students and also for Allen and me,” Becky said.
Allen and Becky have also both been involved in many industry-related organizations as advocates for issues that impact production agriculture.
Becky currently serves on the South Dakota
Beef Industry Council (SDBIC) representing
them as a National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Director serving in many capacities. She currently represents SDSU as a
Council for Agricultural Research, Extension
and Teaching (CARET) delegate, serves on
the Ag Advisory Committee, chairs the SDBIC
Research Committee and was also honored
as the 2015 Eminent Farmer/Rancher by the
SDSU College of Agriculture and Biological
Sciences.
Allen has served on the Cattlemen’s Beef
Board and currently serves on the Cattle
Health and Well Being Committee for the S.D.
Cattlemen’s Association and NCBA.
“Allen and Becky Walth’s passion for the
beef industry is evident in donations of their
time to support the beef industry at the local, state and national level,” said Joseph
Cassady, head of the SDSU Animal Science
Department. “They built their ranching and
farming operations from humble beginnings.”
Allen and Becky started their farming and
ranching operation in 1977 with only five
cows. Together they have grown the operation to a 350-head cow-calf herd run on 6,000plus acres on the banks of the Missouri River.
Allen is a 1971 Animal Science graduate of
SDSU and Becky earned a Home Economics
Education degree in 1976. Both of their children are also SDSU alumni. Steven graduated with a degree in Agricultural Engineering and is a senior test engineer for Gehl.
Kristi earned a Pharmacy degree and works
for Thrifty White Pharmacy. The Walths also
have four grandchildren.
