South Dakota Awarded
$215,000 Opioid Abuse Grant
PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota will use
a $215,000 federal grant to collect and
analyze data about opioid misuse, abuse
and overdose, a state health official said
today.
“South Dakota has some of the nation’s
lowest rates of drug overdose deaths
but we can’t be complacent and ignore
what we’re seeing in the rest of the
country,” said Kim Malsam-Rysdon, secretary of health. “It’s important that we
get a good handle on opioid use in our
state and how to combat it now and not
wait for the problem to grow.”
The funding comes to the South Dakota
Department of Health through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Prescription Drug Overdose: Data-Driven Prevention Initiative in response to
the growing national problem of opioid
drug abuse. South Dakota is one of 13
states funded.
Malsam-Rysdon said she is appointing
an advisory committee to review opioid
use data for the state and develop strategies for preventing opioid misuse and
abuse. Members include:
Tom Martinec, South Dakota
Department of Health, Chair
Kristen Bunt, South Dakota
Association of Healthcare
Organizations
Sara DeCoteau, Sisseton-Wahpeton
Oyate of the Lake Traverse

Chris Diedrich, MD, South Dakota

PIERRE, S.D. – Four proposals from South Dakota school
districts will be funded under the state’s new shared services
grant program. The program was established as part of the
2016 legislative package aimed at improving teacher recruitment and retention efforts in South Dakota. “The Blue Ribbon
Task Force discussions about teacher recruitment and retention included a focus on providing students with access to
high quality learning opportunities, no matter where they are
located in the state. That can be a challenge when teachers
are hard to find, particularly for some of our more rural and
remote districts,” said Secretary of Education Dr. Melody
Schopp. Part of the purpose of SB 133 was to provide incentives for districts to work together to find ways to increase
those learning opportunities.
Recipients of the grants are:
• The Baltic and Garretson school districts will receive
funds to share a Spanish teacher.
• The Bridgewater-Emery and Hanson school districts will
receive funds to share an art teacher.
• The Florence and Henry school districts will receive
funds to share a Spanish teacher.
•The Belle Fourche and Spearfish school districts will
receive funds to share a teacher for English language
learners.
In 2014 South Dakota had the third lowest rate of drug overdose deaths – 7.8
per 100,000 population compared to the
national rate of 14.7. The state also had
the seventh lowest number of opioid
painkiller prescriptions – 66.5 per 100
people compared to 82.5 for the nation
in 2012.
“There is a lot of focus on opioid prescribing in both the public and the private sectors right now,” said MalsamRysdon. “This grant and the advisory
committee is a great opportunity to coordinate those activities and have a real
impact on opioid abuse.”
Meeting details will be posted at http://
doh.sd.gov/news/opioid.aspx.
Reducing the health impact of substance abuse and mental health disorders is one objective of the Department
of Health’s 2015-2020 strategic plan,
Grant awards are for a three-year time period, with a 50

percent reduction in funding in year two and a 75 percent
reduction in year three. A total of $376,000will be distributed
to the districts over the three years.

In preparation for the new heating systems, the
Mead has been getting some work done to the exterior walls. This will help create a vapor barrier
to protect from water in the future, and add some
insulation. The first layers of material have been
installed and the walls have also been readied for
insulation and electrical installation in the near future. It’s a small change that will make a big difference. If you have questions about the project or
events please contact us at the Dakota Territorial
Museum at 610 Summit Street (in Westside Park),
on Facebook, visit our website at www.dakotaterritorialmuseum.org or www.meadbuilding.org, or
call us at 605-665-3898. We are open 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
