2016 Ag PhD Field Day
BROOKINGS, S.D. - SDSU
Extension and faculty from
South Dakota State University Agriculture & Biosystems Engineering (ABE)
Department are participating in the 2016 Ag PhD Field
Day held July 28 at the
Hefty Brothers Farm Baltic
(47506 252nd St, Baltic).
“One of the many exciting topics our team will
be discussing is the new
Precision Agriculture major
SDSU will be offering fall of
2016,” said David Kringen,
SDSU Extension Water
Resources Field Specialist.
“SDSU is the first in the
nation to offer a Bachelor of
Science degree in Precision
Agriculture. This major
will prepare students for
careers in agricultural
equipment management,
agronomy, and companies
working with the management and analysis of
agricultural data.”
Kringen is among the
SDSU Extension staff and
SDSU faculty to discuss
various research projects
focused in the areas of
agriculture and natural
resources. Kringen is on
a team involved in an onsite, on-going tile drainage
research project that will
be highlighted during the
course of the day.
“Subsurface drainage
has been shown to improve
crop production in poorly
drained soils, but can have
downstream water quality
impacts with the removal
of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from the soil
profile,” Kringen explained.
One of the highlighted
studies includes a twostage tile drainage treatment system containing a
denitrifying woodchip bioreactor (installed in 2012)
and a phosphorus removal
bed (installed 2015).
The woodchip bioreactor is being used in conjunction with a phosphorus
adsorption filter to simultaneously reduce the N and P
load in a subsurface drainage system. A recentlyinstalled saturated buffer
designed to reduce nitrogen
in tile drainage water will
also be showcased.
New table-top and
poster displays have been
developed to help demonstrate these edge-of-field
practices and explain their
effectiveness in reducing
nutrient loading to receiving waters of the state.

What to Do if You See a Pet in a Hot Car
(SPM Wire) It happens
every summer. Pets left in vehicles with no owner in sight.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t take
long for this circumstance to
be dangerous or even deadly.
Even on a temperate day, the
greenhouse effect of rolledup windows can heat up a
car to 116 degrees F within
an hour, according to the
Humane Society.
Looking To August At The Library
BY KATHY WIBBELS
Yankton Community Library
Our summer program with
all of the activities and reading has come to an end. The
Prize Store has already been
open for a week and closes at
4:45 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6.
We had great participation
again this year. There were
469 in the children’s category
and 110 teens registered.
Forty-two registered for our
adult reading program. Watch
for total attendance and reading figures in next month’s
column.
Thanks to all of our generous donors who sponsored
programs and filled the store
shelves so our readers could
shop. Thanks also to our
volunteers, both adults and
teens, who helped make our
program so successful. This
is a community effort and we
appreciate all you do for the
library.
The Teen Advisory Board
(TAB) meets on Monday, Aug.
1, at 7 p.m., to plan fall events.
New members are always
welcome. Students in grades
6-12 are invited to join. Applications can be picked up at
the library.
The Yankton County Extension Office, in partnership
with the library, is offering
another Babysitting Clinic on
Aug. 10-11, from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m., both days, at the library.
Youth between the ages of 12
and 18 will learn about the
following topics: safety, First
Aid and CPR, child development, nutrition, entertaining
children, and the business
of babysitting. Stephanie
Siebrant, Yankton County 4-H
Youth Development Program
Assistant, facilitates this class.
The class fee must be paid at
the time of enrollment.
We are already planning fall
story and toddler times. Story

While most pet owners have the best intentions, many are unaware
of the danger of leaving a
pet in a hot car. You can
help spread the word. Free
online resources, available
at HumaneSociety.org, offer
tips, advice and important
information on keeping pets
safe.
This summer, be a hero to

If you have never used Pinterest but would like to lean, call
the library and book a librarian to receive a brief introduction on getting started.
