Mitchell Regional PQA/TQA Certification Training
Summer Reading Program Continues
At The Yankton Public Library
BROOKINGS, S.D. - In an
effort to meet the continuing
certification and re-certification needs of South Dakota
pork producers and transporters, SDSU Extension has
planned quarterly regional
PQA PLUS and TQA certifications trainings throughout
the state.
The next certification
training will be held July 7,
2016 in Mitchell at the SDSU
Extension Regional Center
(1800 E. Spruce St., Mitchell,
SD 57301).
The PQA PLUS training
begins at 1 p.m. (CST) and
the TQA training begins at
3 p.m.
“Summer is a busy time
of year for all involved in
livestock production. Nevertheless, swine caregivers
show their commitment to
raising safe, wholesome pork

The final week of June is a busy one at the Yankton Community Library. Week 4 of the summer reading program begins
Monday, June 27, with two special guests. At 2 p.m., Steve
Rokusek, also known as Science Steve, presents amazing science experiments. All ages are welcome. Then, instead of the
regular preschool story time Monday evening, there is a family
story time at 6:30 p.m. Bestselling author Elise Parsley joins us
to share her new book, “If You Ever Want to Bring a Piano to
the Beach, Don’t!” She will also do a drawing demonstration,
play some music, and provide activities. Book sales and author
signing follow the event. Don’t miss this fun family presentation!
Toddler time is Tuesday, June 28, with sessions at 10:15
a.m. and 5:30 p.m. The theme for the toddlers this week is
BUGS. Craft day for elementary-aged children is Tuesday at 2
p.m. Participants are asked to bring a white or light colored
t-shirt. The project is designing your own sports jersey. Fabric
markers and felt cut-outs are provided. Children not wishing
to decorate a cloth t-shirt can try out their designs on paper
shirts provided by the library.
Preschool story time is Wednesday morning, June 29, at
10:15 a.m. Baseball is the theme for the preschoolers this
week, with baseball books and a baseball craft. At 2 p.m., the
Fitness Fun Club presentation is by the Yankton Archery Center. We won’t be shooting with bows and arrows, but there will
be target practice activities following the presentation. The
Wii gaming system is also available in the meeting room until
3:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The teens meet at 4 p.m. for
outdoor games including spike ball, croquet, and ladder ball.
Preschool story time repeats on Thursday, June 30, at 10:15
a.m. LEGO Club and LEGO Robotics 2 meet from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
LEGO Club is free building time for all ages. Preschoolers must
be accompanied by an adult or teen. LEGO Robotics 2 is for
registered participants only.
The Library Olympics Book Club for upper elementary
readers meets Friday, July 1, at 11 a.m. The group is reading
Mr. Lemoncello’s Library Olympics. The movie for Friday
afternoon is Air Bud. It begins at 2 p.m. and is one hour and 39
minutes long and rated G. All agesINTERESTED IN THIS SPOT?

tions in the industry quality
assurance programs,” said
Heidi Carroll, SDSU Extension Livestock Stewardship
Associate.
Carroll explained that the
PQA PLUS the TQA trainings
address two consumer priorities, pork safety and animal well-being. “Additionally,
packers continue to require
swine caregivers and transporters to keep up-to-date
on their certifications before
accepting hogs,” she said.
“The commitments to these
quality assurance programs
by packers, producers, and
transporters each contributes to the safety and quality
of our pork products.”

These trainings are offered at no cost, registration

Programming details
The National Pork Board
recently completed their
update of the PQA PLUS
materials, which now more
closely matches the format
of the Common Swine Industry Audit.
This SDSU Extension
training in Mitchell is the
first training to use the updated PQA PLUS version 3.0.
Producers with current certifications are not
expected to re-certify in the
new version until their certification is up for expiration.
However, if producers would
like to see what the new version is like, they may attend
and still receive certification
that has a new expiration
date.
