In fact, they teach them how to do it. The two University of South Dakota interns are working with the upcoming production of “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.” The show runs June 2-5 and 10-12 at Dakota Theatre in downtown Yankton. Besides their acting roles, the USD students are choreographing the fight scenes in the show. The play is presented by the Lewis and Clark Theatre Company (LCTC) and the Yankton Children’s Theatre Company (YCTC). During one scene, a boy brandishes a sword in a confrontation with another character. Howe led the boy in a slow walk as he missed the intended target, turned and made another run. “Always hold the sword straight up and down when you start,” Howe said. “When you ‘plunge’ the sword into the other character, always do it on the side away from the audience, so it appears the sword has gone through him.” Robertson instructed the cast to handle the swords with care. “Only you touch it. You don’t let anyone else touch it, and you don’t play around with it. And if it isn’t your sword, don’t touch it,” she warned. Director Sandy Vavra watched the action from the audience, while co-director Amy Bruening worked with cast members. The cast of about two dozen members ranges from 4 years old to adult. In the same way, the production contains something for all ages, Vavra said. “This isn’t just children’s theater. It’s something that will interest everyone,” she said. The play represents the new dramatization of the C.S. Lewis classic tale, set in the land of Narnia. The play recreates Aslan, the great lion, and his struggles with the White Witch, as well as four children who wander into Narnia. According to a storyline written for the play, four siblings are forced to leave their hometown in the midst of World War I. A woman and professor take the children into Kelly Hertz/P&D The plot of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” follows the experience of four children — Lucy (Eva Paulson), Edmund (Trey Sager), Susan (Lauren Bruening) and Peter (Jaden Pearson) after they stumble into the kingdom of Narnia. their house for safety. While playing hide-andseek, youngest child Lucy discovers the land of Narnia. The four children enter Narnia, where they battle wolves, meet talking animals, encounter an evil white witch and meet a magnificent lion named Aslan. Different audience members will take away different messages from the play, Vavra said. “The play contains a historical setting. It also has elements such as good versus evil along with a theme about faith,” she said. “The young (audience members) won’t understand the concept, but they’ll like the magic. They’ll also like the action and fighting scenes between the good and bad guys.” A TEACHABLE MOMENT Besides directing the show, Vavra and Bruening share a connection as elementary Buy • Sell • Trade Quality... The teacher in both of us has a part in organizing this play,” Vavra said. “As teachers, we see that some kids are molded for theater. It’s their niche, and they want to do it. The experience makes them more confident and successful, and they enjoy it.” As teachers, they stressed the importance of teamwork and showing up ready to work. “We started rehearsals in March, and we ran from 6:30-8 p.m. each night,” Vavra said. “We didn’t stay long (at each rehearsal), but we stressed that it was a commitment to our play. They were part of a team, and they were expected to be there for rehearsals during that time period.” 665-1596 www.bridgecityautoyankton.com MV Shopper MV Shopper Hartington Tree LLC TREE TRIMMING, REMOVALS & TRANSPLANTING Sudoku #1 7 8 1 2 5 4 3 8 2 9 6 5 6 7 8 3 9 1 4 6 3 5 2 1 4 6 7 9 8 3 9 7 1 2 5 4 6 Yankton 605-260-1490 Hartington 402-254-6710 Serving Southeast SD & Northeast NE for 20 Years Kent & Kyle Hochstein • Licensed Arborists www.hartingtontree.com Estates Located On West City Limits Road 2510 Wynn Way • $169,800 927 sq. ft. on main, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, main floor laundry, 3 stall garage, appliances included.
