Christian Artist Set For MMC Return
“We were looking at the idea of the tension between the
saint and the sinner — of looking at two contrasting things,
and incorporating that into the production of the music.”
Matt Maher
year the school has hosted
a Christian concert for the
Yankton community, said
Wyatt Yeager, the MMC coordinator for this event.
“We work with an agency
based out of Nashville,” he
said. “They send us talent
from all over the world, like
last year’s band, For King and
Country, (which) was based
out of Australia.”
Yeager said Maher performed at MMC three years
ago, and it was a good time to
bring him back.
“Since then, Maher has
written a lot more music and

Yankton, are you ready to

Eight-time Grammy
Award nominee Matt Maher
is returning to Mount Marty
College for a night of familyfriendly Christian rock at
the school. The concert is
part of Maher’s “Saints and
Sinners” tour, with special
guest John Tibbs, and will be
presented at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at MMC’s Laddie
Cimpl Arena.
This show marks the fifth
even played for the Pope,”
Yeager said.
Besides his Grammy nominations, Maher has also two
Gospel Music Association
Dove Awards for “Songwriter
of the Year” and “Worship
Song of the Year.”
This year’s “Saints and
Sinners” tour is also the
name of Maher’s latest
album which touches on the
issues of unity and the struggle of living “in between,” he
said.
“We were looking at the
idea of the tension between
the saint and the sinner — of
Ron’s Auto Glass
looking at two contrasting
things, and incorporating
that into the production of
the music,” Maher said on
his website. “For example,
you take an imperfect being, who generates analog
sound waves, and they get
recorded into a computer
that turns them into digital
information. You can create
so much within a computer
that there is a fine line of
tension between it sounding
perfect versus human, so we
tried to arrive at reconciliation between the two.”
Maher added that “Saints
and Sinners” was an album
that allowed him to reflect
on his beginning as a musician that got his start in a
garage.
“Every day, I’d go out
there and dream a bit and
ask, ‘God, what do you want
to build here?’” Maher said.
“I thought a lot about the
nature of what it means to
build something, and I didn’t
have a clear sense of where
I was headed. I found myself
in a place of unknowing. So I
naturally started gravitating
toward writings and quotes
from people having experienced the tension between
certainty and mystery.”
Several of the songs that
have been featured so far on
the tour include “Deliverer,”
“Because He Lives (Amen),”
“Glory Bound” and “Firelight.”
He described “Firelight”
as “a song about disillusionment and that very frail
prayer of asking God to burn
and shine in the midst of
that and to continue to light
the way through darkness.
... Mother Teresa offered a
quote that says, ‘If I ever do
become a saint, I will surely
be one of darkness. For I
will not be content to roam
the streets of heaven while
there’s one soul who still
longs for God.’ Her quote
captures that hunger of a
person, who in the midst
of struggle, still loves the
marginalized and still loves
the oppressed.”
The Catholic Christian
message of some of these
songs lines up well with the
Benedictine teachings of
MMC, Yeager said.
He added that the
students greatly enjoy the

concerts when they come to
Yankton.
“The students love it.
They get free tickets and
don’t have to travel to
Omaha or Sioux Falls,” he
said. “They also enjoy being
a part of the set-up for the
concert. They are very supportive, helpful and excited
to have this concert come
back to campus.”
These family-friendly
songs open the concert up
to not only the students but
also to the community, allowing families to enjoy the
show, he said.
“It opens up our doors
and welcomes people up to
us,” Yeager said.
Last year’s concert
brought in 1,500 people to
MMC, with tickets nearly
selling out. With any luck,
this year will be the same, if
not better, Yeager said.
“Either way, we are glad
to have Matt Maher back,”
Yeager said.
