Retired Senior Volunteer Program
Edith is homebound and receives a hot meal delivered
to her door. Tommy will have food this weekend. Ruth receives a meal and a friendly face and Lily will be able to
have a lunch during the summer.
Feeding the hungry in our community is a task about
40% of our volunteers accomplish, which falls under our
national focus area of “healthy futures”. RSVP volunteers
served over 13,000 volunteer hours assuring that programs such as Meals on Wheels, The Banquet, The Sack
Pack program, Vermillion Food Pantry, Vermillion Senior
Meals and Summer Lunch Programs can operate to feed
those at risk of hunger in our community.
The Retired Senior Volunteer Program provides individuals 55 years of age and over the opportunity to stay active and productive through meaningful volunteer activities
providing impact-based volunteer support to nonprofit and
public agencies.
RSVP is a part of Senior Corps, which is administered by
the Corporation for National and Community Service, the
federal agency that improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service and
volunteering.
The Retired Senior Volunteer Program recruits volunteers and places them in community needs according to
their interests, availability and life experiences. We are like
a placement agency for volunteers.
You can become an RSVP volunteer by completing an
enrollment form and applying your skills and wisdom to
making a positive difference in the lives of others.
Other benefits of enrolling as an RSVP volunteer are:
• Free volunteer placement
• The opportunity to use your experience and skills
• The chance to learn something new
• Supplemental accident and liability insurance
• The satisfaction of knowing you are “making a difference”
The Corporation for National Community Service reports
when you volunteer, you’re not only helping others, you are
helping yourself. Studies show that volunteereing helps individuals live longer and promotes a positive outlook on life.
RSVP connects volunteers to non-profit work stations in
need of volunteers. Non-profit agencies become partners
by completing a Memorandum of Understanding with RSVP
to become a volunteer work station and request RSVP volunteers. Our volunteers currently serve at 58 local nonprofit and public agencies in the Vermillion and Yankton
areas.
Last year our local RSVP volunteers served almost
37,000 volunteer hours. About 75% of those volunteer
hours were served in our focus areas of healthy futures,
education, economic opportunity, disaster services, environmental stewardship and assistance to veterans.
The value of the Yankton RSVP volunteers time served
last year, according to the Independent Sector (SD $15.99),
would amount to almost $600,000.
The value of RSVP volunteers is immeasurable when volunteers are making an impact in our community by feeding
people, teaching children to read, improving our environment or preparing for a disaster.
Volunteering is good for volunteers and the organization
they assist!
