management that exists in the United
States far exceeds that of many other
countries.
But what kind of responsibility are
we taking on for ourselves? Does the
agricultural industry, really think about
what that means when we say that we
take on the responsibility for feeding the
world?
Its more than a feeling of pride that we
may feel as this year’s crop out-yields last
year’s. It’s more than the feeling of being
indignant in defending our way of life
or our way of agriculture, in the case of
conventional versus alternative models.
It means that when we see people who
are going hungry in our country, or even
dying of starvation in other countries,
that we are responsible for the fact they
don’t have food. That’s what “taking on
the responsibility of feeding the world”
means to me.
I don’t think that we, as American
farmers, are ready to take on that
responsibility. I think using that phrase,
“we feed the world,” should be done
carefully.
We probably feed more of world than
other countries, and we probably will in
2050, but it is unrealistic for us to think
or believe that we have the responsibility
of feeding the world. Other countries
need to share that responsibility. Other
sectors beyond agriculture, including
consumer-only groups, need to share that
responsibility.
It can’t all fall on our shoulders,
because we just plain don’t have the
capabilities to grow that much food or to
ensure its availability and accessibility
around the world. We can’t dictate what
another nation’s infrastructure looks like
or how its politics work around food.
In the end, it’s everyone’s
responsibility — farmers and consumers,
Americans and other nationalities —
to make sure that the food supply in
2050, or today, meets the demand. The
question is: How do we do that?
