4-H Program Welcomes
New Face To The Team
By Jordynne Hart
jordynne.hart@yankton.net
Clay, Union and Yankton
counties are welcoming a
new face to the 4-H program.
Lauren Hollenbeck
recently accepted the
position of South Dakota
State University (SDSU)
Extension 4-H youth
program advisor for the
three counties.
This native from
Welcome, Minnesota, says
she is ready to empower
youth to reach their full
potential.
Hollenbeck was heavily
involved with 4-H and FFA
when she was younger.
“Looking back, I credit a
lot of where I am today to
the experiences I had when
I was in 4-H,” she said. “I did
everything in 4-H. I showed
animals and did a lot of
projects.”
Hollenbeck said
especially loved showing
goats and the quilt that she
made with her grandma
every year.
“We grew up having
pets and I had fun showing
the goats,” she said. “I also
really liked showing my
quilt that I made. I was the
kind of girl that went to her
grandma’s at least once a
week.”
After graduation,
Hollenbeck continued
her education at SDSU in
Brookings.
“I have a bachelor degree
in animal science and a
bachelor of art degree in
Spanish,” she said. “Getting
my animal science degree
seemed to be the next
closest thing to becoming a
veterinarian.”
After Hollenbeck
graduated from SDSU, she
and her husband moved
to Arkansas where she got
a job at the headquarters
of Tyson Foods while her
husband was getting his
masters degree.
“I worked in research
development,” she said. “I
was working in value-added
meal solutions.”
Though she liked her job
and the warm weather in
Arkansas, Hollenbeck said
that she was homesick for
the Midwest.
“It was hard being 10
hours away from your
family, especially since we
are so close,” she said. “It is
not something you can just
come home quick for the
weekend to go to an event.”
Hollenbeck said
everything fell into place
after landing a job as the
new youth program advisor
while her husband works at
Beef Products Inc.
“Lauren has a lot of
responsibility because
she has the three counties
where she oversees what
is going on in each one,”
said Stephanie Siebrandt,
4-H youth development
coordinator. “Here in
Yankton County, she will
have a big role in all of our
main events. She will have
many of her own programs,
such as youth activities and
after-school programs, and
help me with mine as well.”
With Hollenbeck as a
new addition, Siebrandt said
Yankton County has a huge
advantage compared to the
other counties because they
will have twice of what the
other counties get.
“We have the advantage
here because we can work
together and use both
sources to make programs
bigger and better than we
could with just one of us,”
she said. “It is going to
be easier to have another
body — another person who
knows what is going on. She
will really help answering
people’s questions and
really run the show. When
we go to the state fair, it
will be nice having another
person there representing
Yankton County and help

our 4-Hers.”
Hollenbeck said she is
looking forward to the state
fair in Huron this summer
and hopes to get more kids
in the area involved with
4-H.
“I think 4-H gives kids
a lot more opportunities
to experience things they
might not have been able to
at school or at home,” she
said. “4-H provides a lot of
experiences for the youth. I
did stuff at the county level
that I would have not been
able to alone or at home.”
Siebrandt said that
Hollenbeck is a great
addition to the 4-H team.
“We are really excited
to have Lauren,” she said.
“We can’t wait to see how
she will show her strengths
here in Yankton County
to complement what we
already have going on.”
