June 9, 2015 • Page 8 shop online at www.missourivalleyshopper.com United Way Registration for Garden Educator Workshops Creating Good Citizens One Meal At A Time The mission of the Boys & Girls Club is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most to realize their full potential as caring, responsible and productive citizens. And, that is exactly what is happening at the Boys & Girls Club of Yankton this summer. At the Traditional Unit, which serves sixth- through 12th-grade members, new programs are being introduced to kick off the summer programming. All of the Boys & Girls Club programming is based on three Priority Outcomes: Academic Success, Good Character & Leadership, and Healthy Lifestyles. With membership being only $25 a year for our youth, the Traditional Unit is a safe, productive environment where all youth can come and grow. The diversity of programming at the Traditional Unit appeals to a wide variety of our members, with everything from Fishing Club to Positive Sprouts Gardening being offered. One of the favorite programs of the Club members at the Traditional Unit is the Master Chef Program. Master Chef, part of the Healthy Lifestyle Outcome, is a three-month program that provides an overview of cooking and healthy eating habits to youth. With collaboration from Hy-Vee’s dietitian and the Club’s trained staff, youth are taught the basics of following a recipe, health facts, measuring ingredients, eating together and are encouraged to bring in their own recipes to try cooking. Emma Wagner, Traditional Unit Coordinator, says, “The Master Chef program was an impactful experience where members had the opportunity to learn about cooking techniques as well as the nutritional facts of the foods that they eat every day. My goal was teach them details about cooking and food that they had not previously known or thought about in a fun and safe environment.” More than 650 youth in Yankton at the Traditional Unit and the Academy are making strides towards realizing their full potential and becoming productive, caring Home and Personal Property AUCTION Sunday, June 28 -- 11 a.m. LOCATED: 1700 Pine Street, Tyndall, SD - east of Coop elevator REAL ESTATE consists of a 1248 sq ft, 1 story 3 bedroom home with a full basement and 2 car attached garage. BROOKINGS, S.D. - This summer, SDSU Extension is hosting Garden Educator Workshops for teachers and other youth educators in Rapid City and Sioux Falls. “This training will provide hands-on lesson plan ideas and nutrition resources for the garden, information on growing vegetables, tools for evaluation of garden programs, and stories from area garden projects,” said Chris Zdorovtsov, SDSU Extension Community Development Field Specialist. The program is designed for PreK through middle school teachers, after-school program leaders, school administrators, garden-focused educators, Master Gardeners, and wellness committees. Presenters will share lessons that feature specific fruit and vegetable crops to enhance food and garden education programs. The class will participate in a hands-on activity involving produce preparation and discuss resources available to promote children’s consumption of fruits and vegetables. Participants will identify tools to use for evaluating garden programs at their school or organization. At each location, local educators will share their experiences and stories of developing and utilizing educational gardens.
