YA N K T O N H O M E L E S S S H E LT E R The purpose of the Yankton Homeless Shelter is to offer temporary shelter to homeless individuals and families in a hospitable atmosphere. The shelter serves as community outreach to individuals or families regardless of sex, race or creed. The shelter was founded on the belief that everyone deserves a home. The shelter opened its door in June 1995 and has served over 1600 individuals through 2013. The Shelter was converted from a single family home to its present structure. The structure has three separate living quarters, with the ability to house 8+ people, keeping families and individuals separate. The shelter offers a facility appropriate for shelter 7 nights a week 365 days a year. There are kitchen facilities available and food for our guests to prepare their meals. The shelter tries to provide an environment of warmth and hospitality to help build self­esteem and human dignity. It provides an atmosphere in which no one feels threatened or intimidated. Our goal is to help our clients become self­sufficient to never find themselves homeless again. The Shelter is governed by a Board of Directors representing a wide range of interested organizations. The Shelter is located at 304 West 4th Street in Yankton. Staffing consists of 5 part time employees and volunteers. In addition the local law enforcement agencies provide invaluable services and support essential to the existence of the Shelter. The guests are thoroughly screened and informed about the rules of the Shelter to ensure the safety of the staff and co­occupants. The Shelter is specifically designed to house individuals and families who meet the following criteria. Those needing temporary housing while seeking a job. Those who have found work but cannot afford the initial cost of an apartment. Temporary housing will give them the time to save money for housing. Those who have had their home damaged or destroyed. The Homeless Shelter is located at 304 West 4th Street. We welcome anyone wanting to become more involved to contact us at 605­665­8994.
