Applications Available For SFY2021 Victims’ Services Funding University Of South Dakota
PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota’s Victims’ Services program
has opened its annual application process for funding for
State Fiscal Year 2021.
The grants, which consist of both state and federal
funds, are available to public or nonprofit organizations
that provide services to victims of crime. Such eligible
programs are:
• Victims of Crime Act (VOCA)
• Family Violence Prevention Services Act (FVPSA)
• Services Training Officers Prosecutors (STOP)/
Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)
• Sexual Assault Services Program (SASP)
• Domestic and Sexual Abuse Program (DASA)
• Access and Visitation Program (AV)
Application Deadline is March 15, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. CST.
Late applications will be ineligible for funding. The grant
funding cycle begins July 1, 2020.
Each year, the Department of Public Safety and Victims’
Services, which is part of the Department of
Public Safety, set specific priorities, in addition to the
review criteria, to guide funding decisions. Funding
priorities include:
• Continued support for agencies that maintain
eligibility and have proven their effectiveness in assisting
victims of crime;
• Attention to the federal requirements for each grant;
• Geographic balance, including programs that make
services available to rural and frontier areas of the state;
and,
• A diverse base of funding and other support that
indicates an agency does not rely solely on government
funding.
The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) notes that at least
25 percent of an organization/program’s funding in the
year of, or the year preceding an award, should come from
other sources, which may include other federal funding
programs.
For more information on the application or the grant
requirements, please refer to the FY21 Application
Instructions for the grant program being applied for. These

Services website at https://dps.sd.gov/victims-services/

To Celebrate The 2nd Annual
Unite For USD Giving Day
On Feb. 12 & 13
VERMILLION, S.D.?–?The
University of South Dakota
will kick off its second
annual Unite for USD giving
day on Wednesday, Feb. 12
at 10:57 a.m.
Unite for USD is an
online and on-campus
event designed to unite
all members of the Coyote
community in support of
high-impact programs on
campus. In recognition of
1862, the year USD was
founded, the giving day
will span for 1,862 minutes
from Feb. 12 at 10:57 a.m.
to Feb. 13 at 6 p.m.
Last year, 853 gifts were
received during Unite for
USD totaling $238,730.
“Unite for USD is a
celebration that allows us
to connect with the entire
Coyote community locally
and across the globe and
provides opportunities to
make an impact here on
campus, said President
Sheila K. Gestring. “With a
variety of initiatives across
the university, every
contributor can give to the
area that is most important
to them. Every gift makes
an impact, no matter the
size, and is what continues
to propel our university
forward.”
The kick-off event
takes place Wednesday
morning at 10:57 a.m. in
the Muenster University
Center Pit Lounge. It is
open to the public. Charlie
Coyote and USD Cheer will
perform, guest speakers
will discuss the purpose
of Unite for USD and
students will be given the
opportunity to participate
in a “Price is Right”
activity for a chance to
raise money for Charlie’s
Cupboard, one of the
priority initiatives of this
year’s giving day.
During halftime of the
USD Men’s Basketball
against Western Illinois
on Wednesday at 7 p.m.,
the Coyote community
is invited to join USD’s
Head Football Coach
Bob Nielson as he leads
the crowd in a collective
coyote howl. Hoping for
a large crowd, USD will
attempt to break a world
record for most people to
howl at once.
“The celebration and
howl at halftime are both
great representations of
what Unite for USD is all
about,” said Hailie Warren,
USD’s public relations
officer. “Getting the Coyote
community together to
celebrate all that USD has
to offer and combining
our efforts to continue
moving forward is how we
continue to succeed in all
areas across campus.”

Students Visit Pierre
For CTSO Legislative
Shadow Day
PIERRE, S.D. – February is National Career and
Technical Education Month. As part of the celebration, 37 student leaders came to Pierre Feb. 4-5, for the
South Dakota Career and Technical Student Organizations’ Legislative Shadow Day.
Activities included a social for students, legislators,
cabinet members, and state agency staff. Students
also shadowed legislators at committee meetings and
observed House and Senate floor sessions.
“When students engage in career and technical
education, they experience hands-on learning that
helps prepare them for high-demand careers,” said
Governor Kristi Noem. “These groups are great ways
for students to expand on their classroom learning,
meet peers from across the state, and develop valuable leadership skills.”
Students representing the following CTSOs attended
this year’s event: Educators Rising; Future Business
Leaders of America; Family, Career and Community
Leaders of America; FFA; SD HOSA, a group for students interested in health sciences; and SkillsUSA, an
association of trade, technology, and health occupation students.
By participating in CTSOs, students can apply
knowledge and skills learned in the classroom through
competitive events; develop leadership and employability skills; and serve their communities.
Career and technical education seeks to equip
students with core academic skills and the ability to
apply those skills for careers and life. CTE emphasizes
employability skills like critical thinking, responsibility, and technical skills related to specific career
pathways.
