South Dakota 4-H Launches Teens For Jeans Service Project
BROOKINGS, S.D. - South Dakota 4-H
has launched Teens for Jeans, the 2019-20
statewide community service project. As
part of the project, county 4-H offices and
4-H clubs will collect new or gently used
jeans of any size. Jeans collected will be
donated locally to assist any individual or
organization with a need for jeans.
“Teens for Jeans will affect the state
of South Dakota tremendously, as jeans
will be provided to those in need,” said
Hayden Niles, State 4-H Science Ambas-
sador and member of the statewide 4-H
Community Service Project Committee.
Community members are encouraged to drop-off their new or gently used
unwanted jeans at their local county 4-H
office or VFW Auxiliary. A complete listing
of county 4-H offices can be found online.
Local organizations willing to accept
the donated jeans are encouraged to
contact a county 4-H office to discuss
logistics for receiving the collected items.
Teens for Jeans was selected by the at-
tendees of the 2019 4-H Teen Leadership
Conference held each year in Brookings,
S.D. The State 4-H Ambassadors will
provide oversight and coordination of the
service-learning project. The project will
run until Aug. 1.
“It is important for 4-H members and
other youth to learn and engage in community service projects because it allows
them to give back to the community that
has done so much to support them. Not
only does community service give youth
satisfaction, but it also improves mental
and physical health. Giving back to the
community helps people in need and it
makes participants feel better so it’s a
win-win scenario,” said Niles.
For more information about the Teens
for Jeans project, contact your county 4-H
office or Hilary Risner, SDSU Extension
Regional 4-H Youth Program Advisor, at

MMC Brings The Audience On
Stage For Off-Broadway Comedy
Have you ever wanted
to know what women sit
around and talk about?
Come and find out at Mount
Marty College’s run of the
off-Broadway comedy “A
Coupla White Chicks Sitting
Around Talking,” written
by John Ford Noonan and
featuring music by Loudon
Wainwright III.
In this two-woman play,
Maude has to contend with
new nosey neighbor from
Texas, Hannah Mae, who is
trying to befriend Maude
at any cost. The result is a
hilariously unconventional
relationship that will either
result in the friendship of a
lifetime or a chaotic mess.
“The play is light-hearted
and a thrill to be in,” said
actor Samantha Soukup,
a sophomore majoring in
nursing at Mount Marty.
“This play is about two
women who are finding who
they are while building a
friendship.”
But audiences will not
experience this play in a traditional way. Instead, Mount
Marty College is bringing the
audience up onto the Marian
Auditorium stage, only a
couple of feet away from the
pair of actors, to fully immerse them into the story.
“There’s lots of details
that you wouldn’t see in
a normal show, such as a
working stove that we will
use to cook real food,” says
actor Elita Eastman, a fresh-
man performing arts major
at MMC. “Anywhere you sit,
you’ll see a different show!”
This play is the second
show in Mount Marty’s 20192020 theatre season. For
students at Mount Marty,
the active theatre season
enables them a wealth of opportunities to gain hands-on
experiences in acting, directing and design that may be
carried forward to a future
career or help them serve
their community through
the arts.
Sponsored by Linda’s
Angel Crossing, “A Coupla
White Chicks Sitting Around
Talking” will run from Feb.
7-9 for a total of four shows
— 7:30 p.m. performances
on Friday and Saturday and
2 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Due to the
unique style of the show,
seating is limited to 140 per
performance. Call 605-6681234 or order your tickets
online at www.mountmarty.
edu/boxoffice.
The play is rated PG-13.
