USD Student Art On Display At Stilwell Exhibition
VERMILLION — The 34th annual Stilwell
Student Awards Exhibition is set for Jan.
24-Feb. 21, 2020, at the John A. Day Gallery, in the Warren M. Lee Center for the
Fine Arts on USD’s campus.
The 34th Annual Stilwell Student
Awards Exhibition recognizes artistic talent and creative work from University of
South Dakota Fine Arts B.F.A. and M.F.A.
students. This year’s juror is 2010 USD
Department of Art alumnus and sculptor
of the Coyote Legacy Sculpture, Cameron
Stalheim.
A reception and awards ceremony
is scheduled for Jan. 24 from 5-7 p.m.
Winners in several art categories will be
announced, including the Best of Show,
Faculty Award, Art Department Chair’s
Award and the Gladys Stilwell Freshman/
Sophomore Award. Purchase awards from
the president, provost, dean of students,
dean of the College of Fine Arts, Carol and
Tom Geu, Friends of the Art Gallery and
others will also be presented. Student
work includes graphic design, photography, ceramics, sculpture, painting,
printmaking and installation.
“This is a very exciting exhibition for
the Department of Art,” said Amy Fill,
interim director of the University Art
Galleries. “We received over 250 artworks
from over 70 students, and many of the
students are submitting work for a juried
exhibition for the first time.”
The exhibit is named after USD’s
former chair and professor of art, Wilber
Stilwell, his wife, Gladys, and the Stilwell
family, whose endowment continues
to support USD art students. Stilwell
joined the USD faculty immediately after
receiving his master’s degree from the
University of Iowa in 1941 and served as
a member of the art faculty at USD for
32 years and as department chair for 26
years. His legacy continues to support
this annual exhibition.
The John A. Day Gallery in the Warren
M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts is open to
the public, free of charge, from 8 a.m.5 p.m. weekdays and from 1-5 p.m. on
weekends. For more information about
this exhibition, contact Amy Fill at amy.
