South Dakota Department Of Tourism
Wins Eight Top Travel Industry Awards
PIERRE, S.D. – The
South Dakota Department
of Tourism recently won
eight awards in a prestigious international marketing competition. This is
the most Adrian Awards
the department has ever
won in a single year.
The Hospitality Sales
and Marketing Association International (HSMAI)
Adrian Awards recognize
travel marketing organizations for innovative sales
and marketing efforts in
advertising, public relations and digital marketing.
“The Department of
Tourism is focused on
producing highly effective
marketing that showcases
our state’s incredible
beauty all while utilizing
cutting-edge technology
to reach visitors,” said
Governor Kristi Noem.
“Tourism is a vital industry in South Dakota that is
creating jobs and generating revenue at the state
and local levels of government, so I am proud to see
our efforts recognized with
these prestigious awards.”

The first cold nights sent Billy indoors. Aunt Ada always had room on the couch for Billy. It was different
now, of course, since Desdemona passed away. She
was good, for a cat. Now there was just Billy and the
other cat, Boots, to share the couch.
Billy was no dummy. In the past three years or so,
since he became the official town dog, he not only
knew his duties, but his options as well. Billy’s duties
were to see the children safely across the street to
school (helped by Martin, the crossing guard) and to
visit the residents of the Rest of Your Life retirement
home.
And his options? Well, with cold weather on its
way, Billy knew he could leave his favorite bed under
the cottonwood tree and move into the insulated dog
house the high school kids built for him. And … this
is the good part … he could do what he always did and
move in with Aunt Ada and Boots at night.
In making his daily rounds, Billy was given snacks
out the back door of several cafes and the retirement
home. The Mule Barn had a special each Sunday on
chicken fried steak, so Billy learned to hit the Barn’s
back door when he saw folks going to church.
And Boots doesn’t wiggle around much on the
couch. Life is good.

State Capitol To Implement
New Safety Measures
PIERRE, S.D. – Secretary Craig Price and the
Department of Public
Safety today announced
that a new safety measure
designed to keep South
Dakota’s state Capitol
building safe and accessible to the public will begin
this fall.
A security screening
room will be constructed
near the Capitol’s north
entrance and located in
office space currently
occupied by the Bureau
of Human Resources Clas-
sifications Division. Those
employees have relocated
to another space in preparation of the project.
“This is a proactive
step in working to protect
the Capitol and those
who use it,” said Price.
“We have designed the
screening process to be
the least intrusive as
possible and allow people
to go about their Capitol
business. These improvements will enhance public
safety while preserving
the accessibility of the
statehouse.”
“Our State Capitol
is the people’s house
and this project ensures
everyone who visits the
building has a safe, positive experience while enjoying its historic beauty,”
said Governor Kristi
Noem. “Safety is always
our top priority, and this
modernized approach to
Capitol security will help
us best serve the hundreds of kids and thousands of visitors who visit
the Capitol every year.”
Once the security
screening room is completed, visitors will enter
through the north doors
and be directed into the
screening room. Signage
will help direct visitors
what to do and inform
them of what items are
not allowed in the Capitol.
This information is also
available online here.
More information on
the security screening
process will be announced later.
