Candidates are out meeting voters through appearances at county fairs and barbecues while volunteers are hosting political fundraisers and canvassing in their neighborhoods. As part of its smart justice campaign, the American Civil Liberties Union of South Dakota and supporters will be holding parties throughout the state on Sept. 6 to connect activists with each other, to build community, and to learn about the ACLU’s vision for the future of South Dakota’s criminal justice system and the importance of the 2018 election – particularly with the attorney general race. A smart justice campaign party will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 6, in the Muenster University Center, Room 216A, on the University of South Dakota campus. Presentations from the smart justice campaign parties also will be streamed live on Facebook starting at 6:30 p.m. (https://www.facebook.com/ ACLUSD/) The ACLU’s “parties with a purpose” are designed to get conversations started in communities throughout South Dakota and to get people talking about the importance of smart justice and voting in the November election. Smart justice is a way of addressing criminal justice issues that solves the problems of crime rather than simply punishing people. South Dakota’s next attorney general is perhaps better positioned than any other public servant to usher in a new era of smart-oncrime policies . While the ACLU of South Dakota won’t endorse candidates – it is a non-partisan organization – it does believe people should vote, and that voters should be well-informed and know where candidates stand on civil liberties and civil rights policy issues, like criminal justice reform. It’s not the typical election year campaign. But it’s one that the ACLU of South Dakota believes can be effective as people head to the polls this November.
