Community
Health
Centers
Showcase
Their Work
And Mission
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Community HealthCare Association of
the Dakotas (CHAD) announced
today that South Dakota’s community health centers are making
significant contributions to the
delivery of health care in the state,
while serving as critical economic
engines for the communities they
call home. The state’s four community health centers are providing
quality, affordable health care to
thousands of patients each year,
regardless of their insurance status
or ability to pay, and generating
millions of dollars in combined
economic impact for their local
communities.
Community health centers
have a mission of ensuring access
to quality health care for all South
Dakotans, with a focus on providing primary care in some of the
most rural and remote parts of the
state and serving the uninsured,
homeless, new Americans and
veterans. Health centers serve all
patients regardless of their ability
to pay and offer services on a
sliding fee scale based on income.
In 2016, South Dakota’s health
centers served 17,536 uninsured
patients who made up 25.4% of the
total number of patients served.
Last year, South Dakota’s
health centers provided comprehensive, patient-centered care to
more than 69,000 patients at 42
delivery sites in 33 communities
across the state. Their services
included primary care, behavioral
health, dental care, and enabling
services like care coordination,
patient education and help finding
the right health insurance. Recent
studies show that, on average,
each Medicaid patient receiving
care at a community health center
saved the health care system 24
percent annually.
Health centers have a significant impact on their communities
as access to health care is an
essential piece of maintaining
a strong, vibrant and working
community. They serve both rural
and urban populations and often
provide the only accessible and
dependable source of primary care
in their communities. According
to a 2013 analysis, South Dakota
health centers directly generated
over 500 full-time jobs and had
a total economic impact of more
than $55 million across the state.
Nationwide, community health
centers serve more than 25 million Americans, a number that
continues to grow along with the
demand for affordable primary
care. They produce $24 billion in
annual health system savings, reduce unnecessary hospitalizations
and visits to the emergency room,
maintain patient satisfaction levels
of nearly 100 percent, and serve
more than one in six Medicaid beneficiaries for less than two percent
of the national Medicaid budget.
Gov. Dennis Daugaard issued a
statewide proclamation designating this week, August 13-19,
Community Health Center Week in
South Dakota to recognize health
centers for their commitment to
providing access to health care for
all South Dakotans and for their
impact on local economies across
the state.
In celebration of Community Health Center Week, health
centers are planning events and
promotions to showcase their
centers, introduce new providers,
recognize their staff and engage
their communities. The public is
welcome to stop by a health center
near them to tour the facility,
enjoy some refreshments, register
for door prizes, meet the providers
and learn about health center programs and services. Health centers
are also observing the week by
hosting community events and volunteering for projects to give back
to the communities they serve.

community health centers or Community Health Center Week, visit
