Turkey bowling is just one of the unusual but fun events scheduled for the first Cabin Fever Games. The inaugural event will be held Feb. 18 at the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Center complex on the east side of Yankton. The Cabin Fever Games are hosted by the Yankton Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and the Leadership Yankton Class of 2016. Other volunteers are also helping with the event. The Cabin Fever Games are tailored after similar events in other communities, said CVB director Kasi Haberman. She is coordinating the local games with NFAA marketing and trade show director Brittany Salonen. “I’m excited about it. I think it should be really fun,” Haberman said. “I think it will grow into something larger.” Salonen was traveling and not immediately available for comment. The Cabin Fever Games will fill a big niche during the local winter scene, Haberman said. “We have annual festivals like Ribfest and Riverboat Days,” she said. “But during this time of year, we don’t really have those kinds of events. We have a slump after the holidays, where we trudge through this weather and keep asking how many more weeks and months until spring.” Haberman believes both the timing and location will provide a major boost for the event. “This will be held Saturday, February 18, on President’s Day weekend,” she said. “It’s going to help that we’re holding it at the NFAA archery facility. They have an awesome facility that lends itself to really host something like this.” Six-member teams can register until Feb. 1 with a fee of $150 per team. A prize of $300 will be awarded during the closing ceremonies, along with prizes for the secondand third-place teams. While somewhat tailored after other communities’ events, the Cabin Winter Games will carry a very distinct Yankton flavor, Haberman said. The local events include turkey bowling, snowball golf, a fun relay and cornhole toss. The events don’t call for any particular skills, Haberman said. “People don’t have to be too concerned with running. There is some jogging, but nothing too strenuous,” she said. However, she does recommend practicing for the turkey bowling event. “You’ll be sliding a (frozen) turkey across the floor to knock down real bowling pins. Each participant will get no more than one shot,” she said. “They can practice ahead of time. We have a video of kids testing it out at the archery center. It was posted last week on Facebook.” The cornhole toss is conducted similar to a bean bag toss, Haberman said. The snowball golf competition allows participants to use one club, and it replaces the traditional golf ball with a tennis ball. “We’re hoping there’s snow on the ground, but Mother Nature has a mind of her own,” she said. For now, the organizers are keeping the fun relay under wraps, Haberman said. “We really haven’t released a lot of details. We’re keeping it to close to the vest,” she said with a laugh. The NFAA offers outstanding facilities for both indoor and outdoor events, she said. The day-long event starts at 10 a.m. and is expected to conclude with closing ceremony around 5-6 p.m. The evening party begins at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend any or all activities, Haberman said. Admission is free throughout the day, while the evening party — featuring music by the Dispensers — carries a $5 fee.
