Just a boost to get up in a chair. A push to get the swing going. A lift so you can see over everyone’s heads. A little help, a hand, a pick-up, a ride on a pair of shoulders, or another show-me-how, and you’re good to go. You get some assistance, and then you’re willing to help someone else — especially, as in “Bunny Slopes” by Claudia Rueda, it’s someone having fun. This time of year, more than anything, you probably wish you were able to get out and enjoy some snow. Maybe it’s time for a ski day? Bunny would like you to join him but first, you’ll need to make it snow. He’s got an idea how you can do that. You’ll have to be gentle, though. You don’t want to overdo it. Listen to Bunny; just a little more work and you’re all set. But wait. Nobody’s going anywhere. You might need CLASS-A CDL Regional Driver. Good home time. Great pay and benefits. Matching 401k. You’ll get one more try before you can ski with Bunny and play in the snow. Snowflakes feel cold on your ears. Snowballs go right beneath your skis. Hills are lots of fun. Dips are no problem. Hills and dips together are even better, if you’ve got “some speed!” But holes in the snow (and in the book), well, they can be a problem. Skiing is fun when you’re doing it with a friend, but it can’t go on forever. There comes a time, eventually, when you need to put things away and go warm up. Lucky for Bunny — and for you — that someone else knows that, too … If you haven’t figured it out yet, “Bunny Slopes” is a unique book: it requires your youngster to “help” with the story. Be ready for lots of action, in other words, because your child will want to do this often. Author Claudia Rueda takes the littlest readers on a big adventure with a snuggly rabbit on snow skis, in a book that absolutely demands that you twist it around, shake it, and turn it sideways. Those movements are part of the story, since the rabbit can’t “go” anywhere without them. Easy-to-follow directions turn reader into participant, and nobody would blame you for embellishment here; it would only add to the fun, in fact, although despite the “help” needed to make this story work, the illustrations are cute but simple enough to appeal to quieter kids who’d rather just listen. Beware that this is not a bedtime book. The story requires the kind of participation that’s not conducive to sleepy-time, but if your 3- to 6-year-old enjoys the unexpected and likes to get involved, then here’s your book. In that case, “Bunny Slopes” is something they can’t help but love. The Missouri Valley Shopper and missourivalleyshopper.com is your complete source for buying and selling.
