BROOKINGS, S.D. - SDSU
Extension, USDA, Pheasants
Forever and The Nature
Conservancy will be hosting
Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and Grassland
Fire Planning Workshops in
Watertown March 23 and in
Huron March 24.
Producers who plan to
burn CRP or other grass
in the spring of 2016 are
strongly encouraged to attend one of these sessions.
“Remember, mid-contract
CRP burning must be completed before April 30. Other
pasture and grasslands are
not subject to the April 30
deadline, but may be subject
to other burn restrictions
if there are habitat, easement, or other agreements
in place,” said Pete Bauman,
SDSU Extension Range Field
Specialist.
This training focuses
on instructing landowners
and NRCS support staff on
the methods of planning for
and conducting prescribed
fires. Topics include USDA
rules, firebreak development, grassland ecology,
fire planning, resources and
tools, weather, safety, communications, and filling out
a fire plan. Participants may
bring maps of their areas to
receive input on their individual fire projects.
Bauman added that
landowners wishing to
utilize prescribed fire as a
management action in their
CRP contracts are required
to utilize an USDA approved
burn plan. “This course
offers guidance on the most
current version of the USDA
plan,” he explained.
Landowners not enrolled
in CRP can also utilize this
plan as a general template
for their burns as well.
“The dry spring of 2015
left many producers unable
to complete their planned
CRP and pasture burns. With
the addition of new spring
2016 units, NRCS support
staff will be very busy,” said
Bauman.
He encouraged landowners to take advantage of
this opportunity to begin
planning for their 2017 burns
as well. “You simply cannot
start this process too early
if you expect assistance in
planning and implementation. Those wanting to burn
their CRP this spring will find
that they’ve got some work
to do immediately, those
planning for spring 2017
burns will be in great shape
if they attend this training.”
Workshop details:
Classes at both locations will run from 8:30 a.m.
to 4 p.m. with registration
beginning at 8:30 a.m.; with
a one hour lunch break (participants are on their own
for lunch). The workshops
are free, however RSVP is
preferred.
RSVP by contacting Jan
Rounds, SDSU Extension, at
882-5140 or by email.
