Judging Teams at National Western Stock Show
BROOKINGS, S.D. - The
South Dakota State University Livestock, Meats and
Wool Judging teams started
the 2016 judging season
out on the right foot with
respectable finishes at the
recent National Western
Stock Show in Denver, Colo.
Livestock Team
The SDSU Livestock Judging team placed third in the
National Western Carload
Contest, where students
judge six classes and answer
questions, and earned
seventh place in the Hill
Contest, the traditional contest where students judge
12 classes and talk through
eight sets of reasons.
Overall, the team finished
seventh out of 24 teams.
Members of the team
placed high individually as
well. Nick Delaney, an Agricultural Business major from
Lake Benton, Minn., took
sixth overall in the Carload
Contest and Wyatt Smith,
an Animal Science Major
from Adair, Okla., scored
fifth in cattle. Lindsay Utter,
an Agricultural Communications major from Wheatland,
Wyo., and Smith also placed
in the top 20 overall.
The team, comprised
of students in their junior
year at SDSU, is coached by
Joshua Cribbs and includes:
Delaney, Smith, Utter, Tyler
Jensen, an Agricultural
Business major from Aurora,
S.D.; Kelly Morrison, an
Animal Science/Agricultural
Communications double
major from Belle Plaine,
Minn.; John Bray, an Animal
Science major from Lawsonville, N.C.; Tyler Dolieslager,
an Animal Science major
from Doon, Iowa.; Justin
Murray, an Animal Science
major from Buffalo Center,
Iowa; Tony Munsterteiger, an
Animal Science major from
Ogilvie, Minn.; Dallis VanderWal, an Animal Science
major from Volga, S.D.; Lucas
Stalcup, an Animal Science
major from Ashland, Mont.;
and Merritt O’Connor, an
Animal Science major from
Paxton, Neb.
The National Western
Stock Show kicks off the
judging season and is
one of four main national
contests the team competes in. Over the course
of the season, the team will
compete in 10 competitions
across the country.
Meats Team
The SDSU Meats Judging
team placed ninth overall
and fifth in placing’s at the
National Western Stock
Show, the team’s first
competition of the judging
season.
Individually, Andrew
Berg, a sophomore Animal
Science major from Pipestone, Minn., placed 17th
in beef grading and total
placings. Members of the
team also placed in the top
50 overall, with Berg scoring 28th, Halley Becking, a
sophomore Animal Science
major from Florence, S.D.,
placing 36th, Jordyn Clark, a
sophomore Animal Science
major from Little Rock, Iowa,
taking 40th, and Maggie
Vander Laan, a junior Agri-
cultural Communications
major from Beresford, S.D.,
scoring 41st.
Heather Rode coaches
the team with the help of
Assistant Coach, Dani Evers,
and members include: Berg,
Becking, Clark, Vander Laan,
Kyler Johnson, a sophomore
Animal Science major from
Baltic, S.D., and Rachel Deurmier, a junior Animal Science
major from Artas, S.D.
Students on the team
start in the Introduction
to Meats Science class and
then compete on the team
during the following two
semesters. Throughout the
season, they participate in
a total of eight competitions
across the country.
Wool Team
The SDSU Wool Judging
team finished ninth overall
at the National Western
Stock Show Wool Judging
Contest. The team also
placed fourth in the hand
spinning competition, in
which fleeces are judged
according to their hand spinning value.
Individually, members of
the team placed high as well.
Kaley Nolz, a sophomore
Agricultural Business major
from Mitchell, S.D., was third
individual in hand spinning
and tied for third in placings,
finishing eleventh after the
tiebreaker. Amy Beckstrand,
a freshman Animal Science
and Agricultural Communications major from Waldorf,
Minn., placed 10th in the
hand spinning competition.
Grady Ruble coaches the
team and other members
are: Josh Brown, a freshman Animal Science major
from Peterson, Minn.; Jamie
Beckstrand, a freshman Agricultural Business major from
Waldorf, Minn.; and Callie
Kukuchka, a freshman Animal Science and Agricultural

2016 Dairy Beef
Short Course & Tour
BROOKINGS, S.D. - The I-29 Moo University Dairy
Beef Tour Short Course will be held on Tuesday, March
29, 2016 before the Central Plains Dairy Expo Welcome
Reception and Concert. It will include two bus tour stops
and two panel discussions.
Registration is $25 per person and includes transportation and lunch. Registration is due online at the iGrow Store
by March 25, 2016 or call 605.882.5140. The Western Iowa
Dairy Alliance (WIDA) will be covering the cost of attending
for its members who register.
The bus departs from and returns to the Denny Sanford
Premier Center complex on the south side of the complex
at 1201 West Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57104 (formerly the Convention Center-Arena, Sioux Falls, S.D. )
Schedule:
8:30 a.m. - Load bus
8:40 a.m. - Leave for first tour stop.
9:30 a.m. - Tom and Katy VanderWal dairy beef feedlot
with hoop structure. Brookings, S.D., See their hoop barn
and outdoor feedlot and learn first-hand about the ins and
outs of building, permitting, neighbor relations and manure
handling as the VanderWal’s expanded their dairy beef
operation.
10:45 a.m. - Travel to Sioux Falls Denny Sanford Premier
Center
11:45 a.m. - Lunch, and sponsor recognition, Meeting
Rooms 8-9
12:30 p.m. - Panel discussion. Permitting and public
relations if you are considering to build. Panel members include: Tom VanderWal, SD Dairy Beef Producer; Brain Waddingham, Executive Director of the Coalition to Support
Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF); Andy Schloting, Nutrient Advisors;
and Gene Tinker, Iowa Department of Natural Resources
coordinator of animal feeding operations.

2:00 p.m.- Tour Sioux Falls Regional Livestock, Worthing,
S.D. Brad Klostergaard, Manager to discuss buyer perspective on dairy beef animals.
2:30 p.m. - Panel discussion: Managing to meet consumer demands. Focusing on “Lameness / Handling in the Dairy
Beef Industry” - Russ Daly, DVM SDSU Extension and “How
do we defend the use of implants and beta-agonists in dairy
beef production” - Nicole Kenney Rambo, U of M Extension
Feedlot Educator,
3:30 pm - Travel back to Denny Sanford Premier Center
