“People can get a better understanding of
the past culture of the state’s tribes,” Vandel
said. “They need to understand that these
cultures continue to thrive.”
Some of the modern art pieces should also
serve as a reminder that the tribes’ culture
isn’t dormant but continuing to thrive, albeit
on a smaller scale than they once did.
“People see the tribes as a past and not as
a present or future,” Vandel said. “This exhibit
enables them to look at their history in different eras and allows people to recognize that
the art is continuing to evolve.”

modern times from 1940 on. The types of art
include sculptures, paintings, beadwork and
carvings. Photographs and texts are also part
of the exhibit.
“In each category, we tried to find the best
examples of each type of medium from our
collection,” said Museum Curator of Collections Dan Brosz. “A vast majority of what is in
the exhibit is what we’ve collected over the

How to Pick a Healthcare
Plan if you have a
Chronic Condition
(StatePoint) Choosing a healthcare plan can be difficult,
especially when you have a chronic lung disease like chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Affecting millions of
Americans, COPD includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema and makes it difficult to breathe. It can also be very
expensive.
“Understanding the true total cost associated with available healthcare plans is so important for those with highcost health needs like COPD, as access to care doesn’t help
patients unless they can afford it,” says Harold P. Wimmer, National President and CEO of the American Lung Association.
When choosing a plan, consider all the factors that affect
yearly out-of-pocket costs, including the premium, deductible
and co-pay or coinsurance amounts. Also, check each plan’s
coverage for doctors, specialists, hospitals and medications.
COPD patients may reach the maximum out-of-pocket expenses. Adding the total premiums to that figure should give
patients an accurate estimate of annual costs.
The deadline for individuals to enroll in a healthcare plan
for 2016 is January 31. For guidance on choosing the most
cost-effective plan, visit Lung.org. COPD patients and their
caregivers can call the Lung Association’s free HelpLine at
1-800-LUNGUSA to speak with a certified enrollment counselor.
Before enrolling in a healthcare plan, use free resources
available to help you make the most financially sound decision for your circumstances.

“The culture is alive and well and still producing beautiful art,” Brosz added. “Exhibits
like this help people get a better idea of other
ethnicities in our state. We have a wealth of
cultural difference in South Dakota.”
With the exhibit’s two-month stay at MMC,
it’s likely to garner many local viewers.
“People will get a good sense of the Nakota,
Dakota and Lakota people through the art presented that has been made in our great state,”
Brosz said.

List Of 88th Annual Academy Award
Nominations Announced
Su
Local history enthusiasts have a new piece
of history they can view in Yankton for a
limited time.
The traveling exhibit “Living Traditions:
Dakota, Nakota, Lakota Art” arrived on the
Mount Marty College (MMC) campus Jan.
4. It is currently on display at the Bede Art
Gallery, where it will remain until Jan. 29.
After that, it will be displayed at the Mother
Jerome Schmitt Library from Feb. 1-26, also on
the MMC campus. There is no fee to view the
exhibit.
The “Living Traditions” exhibit was created
in 2008 by the museum of the South Dakota
State Historical Society as part of a project
to start a traveling exhibits program. Other
exhibits include “Lewis and Clark in South
Dakota,” “South Dakota Communicates” and
“Life Underground: Hard Rock Mining in the
Black Hills.”
“We had a list of potential exhibit ideas
and one of the ideas dealt with Native American culture in a different way,” said Museum
Curator of Exhibits Kate Vandel. “We were
originally looking at a way to feature our Native American collections, and the associate
curator and designer put the exhibit in the
direction it went in.”
Since its creation, “Living Traditions”
has visited more than 50 venues and has
been viewed by 210,000 people. It is popular enough to have two different sets of the
exhibit showcased around the state.
“We’re very pleased to have it on display
in Yankton, particularly on the MMC campus,”
Vandel said. “We hope a lot of students go see
it.”
The exhibit is organized by the different
types of art the Dakota, Nakota and Lakota
people have created over the years. The art
comes from three time periods: the nomadic
