2015 Friends of the Animal Science Department
BROOKINGS, S.D. - Two
alumni who through the
years have provided multiple and varied forms of
support to the South Dakota
State University Animal Science Department and SDSU
College of Agriculture and
Biological Sciences were
recently named the 2015
“Friends of the SDSU Animal
Science Department.”
Rufus and Patty DeZeeuw
of rural Elkton, S.D. were recognized both at the department’s awards banquet, and
at a special reception hosted
by the SDSU Animal Science
Department on Oct. 23, in
Brookings, S.D.
“Rufus and Patty
DeZeeuw give back to their
community and SDSU in
many ways,” said Joseph
Cassady, SDSU Animal Science Department Head. “As
leaders who give generously
of their time and talent, they
are excellent examples of
what we hope all SDSU Department of Animal Science
Alumni will be become.”
According to Cassady,
the DeZeeuw’s support to
the department can be described as three-fold, including hands-on support with a
very proactive, ‘let’s get this
work done’ attitude, serving in formal and informal
advisory roles, and giving
financial support.
“They have a passion for
the SDSU Animal Science Department and recognize that
their life and career success-
es were positively impacted
by the academic experience
and the life-long relationship
with staff members,” stated
the nomination letter about
the couple. “Rufus and Patty
DeZeeuw...epitomize those
students who stand above
the crowd by demonstrating
a sustained long-term commitment to our department
and the next generation of
students.”
Rufus and Patty most
recently played major roles
in developing the SDSU Signature Wool program. This
project transforms wool provided by South Dakota sheep
growers into SDSU stadium
blankets, queen-sized blankets and scarves which are
then sold to fund scholarships within both the Animal
Science Department and the
SDSU College of Education
and Human Sciences.
The couple worked
numerous hours bringing
the project to fruition after
being approached by Barry
Dunn, South Dakota Corn
Utilization Council Endowed
Dean of the SDSU College
of Agriculture & Biological
Sciences and Extension Director, about the possibility
of Signature Wool Products
for SDSU.
Patty dealt with Faribault
Woolen Mill to produce the
products. Rufus and Patty
then transported the final
products back to Brookings
for the unveiling at the S.D.
Sheep Growers Association
Convention in 2013. Patty
continues to promote the
SDSU Signature Wool Products at a variety of events.
The DeZeeuws are strong
supporters of SDSU Extension activities and were
instrumental in hosting the
S.D. Sheep Growers Association convention and by
helping support additional
convention features such
as a farm tour and “Taste
of Lamb” events, which
brought interest from sheep
producers across the state.
The DeZeeuws have held
numerous advisory roles,
including participation on
the current College of Ag and
Biological Sciences Dean’s
Advisory Council and the
Animal Disease Research
and Diagnostic Laboratory
Advisory Committee.
The couple has also
provided financial support
to the wool judging team and
other events throughout the
years.
Rufus and Patty both
graduated from SDSU with
degrees in Animal Science.
Patty also received a Master’s Degree in Biology from
SDSU. During their college
career, they were members
of the wool judging team and
participated in Little International (Little I). Rufus was
employed by SDSU’s Sheep
Education and Research Unit
and involved with Little I
leadership positions.
Their farming operation,
which started as a purebred Suffolk flock, quickly
expanded to the current
diversified operation which
has included purebred
Suffolk, Hampshire and Columbia sheep, more than 120
commercial cows, and crops.
In 2009 they received the
S.D. Master Lamb Purebred
Award for their excellence in
production and leadership in
the sheep industry.
Patty started D & D Insurance in 1996 and continues
as the owner and operator of
that business.
The “Friend of the Animal
Science Department” recipient must have provided con-
tributions to the department
over a period of at least 10
years and may not be a current SDSU employee. ?iGrow
