AMSBERRY Yankton Area Arts Yankton Area Arts has had a fantastic year full of classes, events, projects, and concerts. All those activities are on display at the GAR Hall Art Gallery through Oct. 6 in an exhibit titled #ArtHappensHere. I would like to thank all of the students, teachers, performers, and community members who participated in the exhibit and have put their items on loan to us for the past few weeks. You are the reason YAA is still around after 40 years! We are here because you take art classes, you play an instrument, you attend concerts, you create jewelry or you take photos! YAA is dedicated to our mission of educating, advocating and integrating the arts within Yankton in an effort to enrich the community, and without you, we aren’t possible. Thank you! Yankton Area Arts is pleased to welcome artistKaren Kinder of Brookings to the GAR Hall Art Gallery in October. “Impressions on the Prairie” is a collection of oil paintings focusing on the landscape of South Dakota. A graduate of Northern State University, Ms. Kinder retired from teaching in 2012 and is focusing her attention on her home studio. “My eyes have always been drawn to the horizon,” she said. “I’ve watched clouds push from west to east since my earliest years on the family farm. Though I’ve long since Julie AMSBERRY left there, the images remain and I seek them out.” Kinder’s exhibit will open on Friday, Oct. 9. and run through Tuesday, Nov. 17. There will be a reception and gallery talk with Karen Kinder on Friday, Nov. 6, from 5-7 p.m. at the GAR Hall Art Gallery located at 508 Douglas Ave. There are plenty of additional arts events happening this month to pique your interest. The Lewis and Clark Theatre Company is presenting “Steel Magnolias” this month! You can catch it now through Oct. 11! The Yankton High School Drama Department will present “Almost, Maine” Oct. 23-24, and 26. Do you have an arts related event you’d like us to share? Email us at yaa@iw.net. The Yankton Area Arts Exhibit Committee has selected the theme for the 2016 Mighty Mo Photo Exhibit. It will be based on “The Animals from the Journals of Lewis and Clark.” Those who have participated in previous years have been notified by email. New photographers can visit our website: www.YanktonAreaArts.org or call our office for more information. The 2016 Mighty Mo Photos will be on display July 22-Sept. 6, 2016, in the GAR Hall Art Gallery. Mark your calendars for your favorite holiday happenings! The Tour of Homes will take place on Sunday, Dec. 6, from 1-4 p.m. Tickets will go on sale starting on Nov. 9. More information on homes and tickets will be available in the coming weeks! The Crimson Door Holiday Boutique was a huge success last year and we can’t wait to share it with you again this year, which is our 10th! The GAR Hall will transform into a unique holiday shopping boutique full of one-of-a-kind handmade gifts! Doors open to the public on Friday, Dec. 4, from 5-7 p.m. If you are a member of YAA you get a first look, and first chance to buy on Dec. 4 from 1-5 p.m.!
