City Introducing New Activities For The Season
BY ROB NIELSEN

Yankton is gearing up for its biggest summer
yet, and the city is quick to note the multitude
of activities coming to town. From motorcycles,
to international archery competitions, to traditional favorites such as RibFest and Riverboat
Days — the community has a lot in store.
Yankton City Manager Amy Nelson told the
Press & Dakotan she’s excited for the opportunity to show off the community.
“I’m really excited about everything that’s
happening and all the visitors that are coming,”
Nelson said. “I feel like it’s our opportunity to
show off our community and kind of roll out
the red carpet and show our hospitality to, not
just people in the area, but across the country
and all over the world.”
One of the new highlights of the summer
is set to coincide with the 75th annual Sturgis
Motorcycle Rally in August.
Nelson said with such an important event
to the state coming up, the city wanted to make
an effort to take part.
“This was really in preparation for the 75th
anniversary of Sturgis,” she said. “They’re expecting many more visitors to Sturgis than has
happened in the past, so to prepare for that, we
want to try to welcome those that are coming
up from the south and maybe encourage them
to use Yankton as one of their stopovers.”
For the inaugural Rumble at the River, the
city is planning to offer primitive camping in
the Riverside Park area for riders heading to
and from the rally.
Parks & Recreation Director Todd Larson
told the Press & Dakotan the event will go
beyond just offering camping to bikers.
“We’re talking about Saturday, Aug. 1, from
trucktrailerinc.com
TRUCK
2-3 p.m., we’d like to do a motorcycle parade
where we’re actually going to shut down both
levels of the Meridian Bridge and motorcycles
will be allowed to cross over on the lower level
of the bridge and come back over the top,”
Larson said.
The motorcycles will then be stopped
across the top deck of the bridge for an aerial
photo, followed by a bike parade that will take
the motorcyclists from the Meridian Bridge, to
the Gavins Point Dam area and back into town
through downtown.
Larson said the attention will then shift
towards the Riverside Park area.
“From 3-5 p.m. at Riverside Park, there’s
going to be a band in the amphitheater so we’d
like to get people out and about and down to
the park to see the motorcycles and enjoy free
entertainment at the Riverside Park amphitheater. From 5-8 p.m., the entertainment will
be at The Landing.”
The Landing will also be offering its gravel
parking lot to bikers with campers and toy
haulers. The main camping area will be
located along Riverside Park. Camping will be
open between July 29-Aug. 11.
Larson said following the entertainment at
The Landing, the party shifts into downtown.
“Then we turn the focus up to the block of
3rd St. between Capital St. and Douglas Ave.
(They’re) going to have a band out on the
street and have entertainment there.”
Motorcycle parking will be available on
that block to give the area the feel of a “miniSturgis,” he said.
Larson said they’re still working out many
of the final details of the event.
