Whenever Delbert McLain – our chamber of commerce
here – gets a new idea, he generally shows up at the Mule
Barn for coffee. He likes to try the ideas out on bonafide members of the world dilemma think tank before springing them
on the world.
“What I’m thinking, guys, is this,” he said, “We need to
bring the Olympic Games here to the valley!”
You could almost hear his balloon of happiness pop
when we reminded him of a few drawbacks to his plan: it
would cost millions to build all the necessary facilities, there
is no place to put all the athletes, and the Olympic parade
could march from one end of town to the other in 10 minutes.
He sulked in his coffee and then ordered a sweet roll to take
the sting out of reality.
But just about the time Herb mentioned there not being a
place for all the athletes to spend the night, Bernie was walking behind us, headed back to his table. According to Bernie,
he won the European war almost single-handedly, with just a
little help from General Patton here and there.
“Olympic athletes?” Bernie said, looking down on us
from on high, “You sure don’t want them here. Ain’t safe.”
Okay, so someone had to ask him why not.
“Aliens,” he said. “Ain’t human. This is just their way of
taking over our way of life. You know, get themselves on TV
and first thing you know …”
“Taking over …?”
“Sure,” Bernie said. “You see those pole vaulters? Those
high jumpers? It’s from training where there isn’t as much
gravity. And where would that be? Aha …you see now?
“And those little girls who go flippity flippity? You
think real girls can do that? Not on your tintype, boys! Just
ask Doc here. Doc, can a human being do flippities like that?”
“Well …”
“See what I mean. You don’t want to invite them to come
here and flippity flippity, guys. First thing you know, our kids
will want to do that and they can’t, of course, and that will
give them inferiority complexes … and once we’re inferior
…”
He looked up toward the ceiling as if he were searching
for spacecraft. There didn’t really appear to be anything to
say to logic like that.

BROOKINGS, S.D. - South Dakota businesses interested in
enhancing their employees’ access to physical activity are
eligible to apply for one of 10 $2,000 grants offered by the
South Dakota Department of Health (SD DOH). Application
deadline is Aug. 25, 2015.
“These grants assist worksites interested in implementing physical activity policy and physical activity environmental changes,” explained Nikki Prosch, SDSU Extension
Health & Physical Activity Field Specialist.
Prosch is the lead on this project, she is working with SD
DOH to provide training to the 10 businesses who receive
the 2015 Steps to Wellness Grants.
“This project is unique because of its strong focus on
sustainable initiatives,” Prosch explained. “Currently, many
worksites do health challenges and programs - but what
we’re looking for here is to help change worksite policy and
provide funding that will change the working environment
so employees have opportunities to be active year round.”
Once grants are assigned, Prosch will work with grantees
to provide training utilizing the Centers for Disease Control
toolkit “Steps to Wellness - A Guide to Implementing the
2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans in the
Workplace.”
Eligibility Criteria: All South Dakota worksites are eligible
to apply for funding. Activities should be designed to create
environmental and policy changes or provide opportunities
not already offered to employees related to physical activity. Funding should be used to enhance sustainable physical
activity policy change within the workplace.
Project Types: Eligible projects will be awarded up to
$2,000, with 10 applicants funded. Funding will be awarded
for projects that strategically address environment and
policy change related to promotion of physical activity.
Health-related policies are formal or informal written statements that are designed to protect or promote employee
health. Environmental change refers to the physical factors
at and near the workplace that help protect and enhance
employee physical activity.
Policy Development: The SD DOH has developed a Model
Worksite Physical Activity Policy to frame policy adoption in
the workplace for physical activity. The model policy document is available for download at the Good and Healthy
SD website. Workplaces applying for funding are strongly
encouraged to use this document as a guide for developing
the proposed physical activity policy for their workplace.
“Example projects can include something as simple as
dedicating an open office or unused space for engagement
in physical activity or installing bike racks on worksite property,” Prosch said. ?iGrow
Appreciate Depreciation
Remember, too,
that you basically
destroy whatever
you drive. You have
to think of your vehicle as overhead.
So, you’re going to
destroy a $25,000
van or a $5,000
van all in the same
period of time. As
Dave
a businessman,
which would you
rather destroy? The
answerBook 59
is whatever
is the least expensive and gets the job done!
— Dave
BY DAVE RAMSEY
Dear Dave,
I’m self-employed, and I travel about
30,000 miles a year in my van. I’m three
payments away from having the vehicle
paid off, but it has 170,000 miles on it.
Do you think it would be a good idea
for me to buy a new van and have the
tax advantages that would go along
with it?
— Doug
RAMSEY
Dear Doug,
There are two things you can do on
taxes when it comes to your automobiles. You can straight line depreciate
them, which is what you do with expensive vehicles, or you can write off the
mileage. That’s a good idea if you drive
a lot. The thing is, you get the mileage
whether you have debt or not.
Let’s say you bought a $25,000
van. If you depreciate that over five
years, that’s $5,000 a year. If you made
$65,000, and take $5,000 from that,
you’d pay taxes on $60,000. If you
didn’t have that, you’d end up paying
$1,250 in taxes. In other words, you’d
be spending $25,000 over five years to
save $1,250 a year on taxes. That’s a
trade I don’t think you want to make.

When you stop borrowing money
and don’t have any open accounts,
your credit score will slowly disappear.
The big thing is that you don’t want
to be caught in no-man’s land in terms
of a credit score. You want either a
fabulous one, which means you’re in
debt all of the time, or you want no
score because you don’t have any open
accounts.
By the way, did you know that you
can still qualify for a mortgage, even
with no credit score? There are still
mortgage companies out there that will
do manual underwriting. It takes a little
extra effort, but in my mind that’s a
small price to pay.
Cancel the cards, Ken. I’ve never
