What Will You Build?
of Yankton County

new home in June.

Worldwide, 1.6 billion
people live in substandard
housing. Habitat for
Humanity International’s
vision is a world where
everyone has a decent place
to live. Habitat has helped
more than 3 million people
construct, rehabilitate or
preserve homes since 1976.
Habitat for Humanity of
Yankton County started in
1996 under the leadership of
Dr. Kenneth Halverson. The
local af?liate has served 40
families as of February 2014!
As the need for affordable
housing in our community
swells, the need for Habitat
for Humanity of Yankton
County is more crucial
than ever. Habitat for
Humanity offers a “handup” to families in need of
safe, affordable housing.
Habitat for Humanity of
Yankton County seeks to
put God’s love into action,
by bringing people together
to build homes, community
and hope. This mission is
ful?lled through Habitat’s
core housing program and
the A Brush With Kindness
program.
Habitat, along with our
community, is responsible
for building 37 homes.
In addition, the af?liate
has served two families
by recycling homes that
were previously owned by
homeowners.
In 2014, the goal is to
serve three families in
need. Nicole Myers and her
two sons will become the
new homeowners of one of
Habitat’s recycled homes.
Linsey Colgan and her
daughter will become the
new homeowners of the new
construction which is on
schedule to break ground in
June. In addition, Habitat
has one family on the
waiting list. Construction
is planned to begin on their
home in the spring of 2015.
In October 2013, Habitat
for Humanity of Yankton
County partnered with the
Yankton Area Foundation,
United Way, St. Johns
Church and other supporters
to provide assistance with
home repair. A Brush With
Kindness is for families that
own their own home, but
are in need of a “hand-up”
to repair their home. Once
selected the family must
commit to partnering by
providing sweat equity
time while volunteers are
assisting with their home
repair. Upon completion
of the repair, the partner
will make a small monthly
payment to Habitat to cover
the material costs involved
with their project.
Habitat for Humanity
of Yankton County seeks
to complete 3-4 A Brush
of Kindness projects this
year and is now taking
applications. If you know
of someone in need of a
“hand-up” or if you are need
and live in Yankton County,
please contact our of?ce at
260-4224 and request an
application. The af?liate
is committed to working
on light exterior projects
to include yard clean-up,
landscaping, painting and
other minor repairs.
All payments received
from partner families go
into the Fund for Humanity
revolving account which
allows Habitat to pay it
forward by building 1 home
per year. To serve more
than 1 family per year, the
af?liate participates in
several fundraising activities
throughout the year. In April
the Habitat 500 Bike Team
hosted its annual rummage
sale and warehouse sale
which helps the team raise
money to participate in a
500 mile bike ride hosted
in Minnesota. In 2013, the
Bike Team consisting of Tom
and Jane Gilmore, Glen and
Barb Mechtenberg, Barb
Olson, Liza Larson and Julie
Dykstra raised over $20,000
for Habitat for Humanity of
Yankton County, 100% of the
money that the bike team
bene?ts the local Yankton
Chapter.
What will you build?
By contributing or
volunteering time you
will build friendships,
community partnerships,
community pride,
community goodwill and
hope. To get involved
contact Julie Dykstra at
260-4224 or go to www.
habitatyanktoncounty.org.
