December 10, 2013 • Page 2 shop online at www.missourivalleyshopper.com South Dakota Holiday Traditions: Candies, Movies & Music By Katie Hunhoff South Dakotans have an independent streak that shines with unique traditions when Christmas rolls around. We've written about several special traditions in South Dakota Magazine. Dragging home pungent cedar trees from East River hills. Honoring elders in Indian Country. Norwegian lutefisk dinners and delivering creamy fudge to our state's inmates. Here are some favorite activities that reflect our holiday heritage. Christmas for many Rapid Citians must include a night at the historic Elks Theater, watching the Jimmy Stewart film It's a Wonderful Life. Six showings of the black and white classic are planned on Christmas Eve (at 1 and 3 p.m.) and Christmas day (at 1, 3:30, 6 and 8:30 p.m.). The Elks was built in 1912 as an opera house for the fraternal Belts, Wallets, Socks & Gift Certificates Boston Shoes to Boots 312 W. 3rd • Yankton • 665-9092 Holiday Early Deadlines Classifieds Deadline for the Dec. 24th Edition is Thursday Dec. 19th at 11 a.m. The Missouri Valley Shopper will be closing at noon on Tuesday, December 24 and closed all day Wednesday, December 25. Happy Holidays from all of us at the... SHOPPER MISSOURI VALLEY organization. Today it's owned and operated by Curt Small, who amazes the local entertainment industry with his diverse offerings and low admission prices. Tickets are just $5 for most movies. The Elks Theater is also hosting the Hegg Brothers again this year as they tour the state with their Holiday Jam. Brothers Jeremy and Jon wanted to keep an annual tour alive after performing with the Acoustic Christmas' farewell tour. The Heggs' 10-piece band combines holiday standards and eclectic musical styles with stories of the season. They play at the Elks Theater on Dec. 5 at 7:30. For over 50 years Huron neighborhoods team up and decorate according to an assigned theme. Today there are almost 40 "lanes" participating with names like Christmas Goose and Candy Cane Lane. Contact the Huron Chamber & Visitor's Bureau at 352-0000 to receive a list of the lanes with addresses. String popcorn around an old tree and bake apple dumplings on the old wood stove at the 21st annual Frontier Christmas, set for Dec. 14 at Fort Sisseton, south of Lake City in Marshall County. Neighboring ranchers bring horsedrawn wagons — even sleighs if there is enough snow — and guests sing carols as they tour the 19th century fort. Sometimes we find personal traditions the most endearing and inspiring. Marion Kryger of Vermillion has been making and giving away 130 pounds of peanut brittle for over 40 years. It began when his wife was making cookies and candy in preparation for Christmas. "You're not doing anything," she complained. "You can make the peanut brittle this year." "Some people hunt and fish. I make peanut brittle," Kryger told us. "It makes me happy that people get so much enjoyment from it." The retired farmer gives his brittle to the senior center, local museum, historical society and Catholic church. He also 1/2 cup hot water 3/4 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons butter 2 teaspoons vanilla 2 teaspoons soda 1 pounds raw peanuts Read & Recycle! Katie Hunhoff is the editor of South Dakota Magazine, a bi-monthly publication that explores our state's culture. Marion's Peanut Brittle 2 cups sugar Combine water, syrup, sugar and salt in a heavy pan and bring to full boil. Add peanuts carefully to prevent splatter. Continue cooking on medium heat using a good candy thermometer, stirring occasionally until the mixture reaches 275 degrees. Add butter and vanilla. Stir frequently to prevent burning. Cook to 300 degrees, remove from heat and add soda, stirring quickly and vigorously to distribute evenly and complete foaming action. Pour mixture evenly onto 3 buttered Teflon cookie sheets one at a time using stirring spoon to spread evenly. Use a fork to gently pull the outside edges flat. As brittle begins to cool, lift and gently pull until thin. Marion recommends wearing gloves when pouring the hot brittle onto the pans to help avoid accidents. “Be very careful with the 300 degree mixture,” he says. “If you get the mixture on your skin, it just continues to burn.” Dining Equal Housing Opportunity Equal Housing Opportunity Real Estate consists of 115+/- acres ofvery productive Jackson Township farmland nearly 100% of which is presently under cultivation with the predominant soils consisting of highly rated Clarno-EthanBonilla and Clarno-Crossplain-Davison, some of Bon Homme County’s finest. One hundred and thirty pounds is quite an undertaking; one batch produces two pounds and takes an hour to make. Kryger's extensive experience makes him a brittle expert. One trick he shared with us is to warm the cookie sheets before pouring the hot brittle. The candy will cool and harden more slowly, giving him time to stretch it on the pan. "Thinning keeps it light and crunchy," he says. "You can eat my brittle with false teeth."
