anything better than playing for 15,000 people?
That's the greatest feeling
in the world," Lerdal told
us last year when we interviewed her for a story
about Kool Deadwood
Nights. She and the
Fayrohs play popular period covers like Why Do
Fools Fall in Love and The
Way You Do the Things You
Do.
This year's headliners
are Paul Revere and the
Raiders and The
Buckinghams. Lerdal doesn't mind being an opening
act. "There's a great thing
about being a bridesmaid
band, the pressure is on
the headliners," she said.
A more intimate concert
will occur on the same
weekend across the state
at the historic Orpheum
Theater in Sioux Falls. The
Rock Garden Tour, a SDPB
program, will host a live
concert on Friday, Aug. 23
featuring Jami Lynn and
Dylan James. The two
musicians met while Jami
Lynn, a Glacial Lakes folk
singer, was in Rapid City
for a performance and ran
into James on a street corner where he was playing
music. She invited James
to her concert that evening
and before parting they
made plans to collaborate
on an album.
The album, Cluck and
Croon, was recorded at the
Homestake Opera House in
Lead, James' hometown,
and features a mix of folk,
bluegrass and jazz. They
included a song called
Pride of the Prairie, written
in 1907 by George

native who moved to New

South Dakotans know
how to celebrate summer
and in August we do it with
a bang at big events like
the Sturgis Rally, and various fairs and festivals.
Often the biggest draws
are live bands, making
August South Dakota's
most musical month.
Some of our favorite acts
are local musicians we look
forward to hearing every
year. Darla Drew Lerdal of
Rapid City and her band
DD and the Fayrohs have
been playing at Kool
Deadwood Nights every
August since the event
began 23 years ago. George
Milos of the Deadwood
Chamber believes the town
draws 60,000 people over
the event's four days,
which celebrate the cars
and music from the '60s
and '70s. "Could there be
