Dive In Yankton
Yankton will soon have a new state of the
art aquatic center thanks to the hard work and
dedication of a handful of tenacious volunteer
community members who decided to roll up their
sleeves and make sure “it happened, this time”.
This group called themselves “Dive In Yankton” and
for a little less than two years, it seemed as though
you couldn’t go anywhere without the subject of
the project popping up.
The Fantle Memorial Park Pool was originally
built in 1947 with generations of community
members enjoying hot summer days within
that chain link fence. However, after 72 years,
with the equipment failing and infrastructure
crumbling, the facility no longer met the aquatic
recreation expectations of today’s users. It is
these expectations and challenges that drove the
DIY committee to fully commit to the project and
collaborate with city officials, local businesses and
media as well as individual community members
to rally the support they needed to secure a new
aquatic center for the Yankton community.
The committee was originally led by chairman
Josh Svatos as well as Paige Elwood, Mike
Villanueva, Stacey Nickels, Duke Ellingson, Eric
Ambroson, Dave Spencer & Mike Healy, but
eventually teamed up with a group of Leadership
Yankton graduates, (a leadership program
facilitated by the Yankton Area Chamber of
Commerce). The individuals from Leadership
Yankton that joined in the charge included DIY
Marketing Chair Kasi Haberman, along with
Marissa Terca, Alex Wagner, Katie Dollerschell,
Kourtney Loecker, Katie Harrell, Melissa Brimm,
Ryan Cwach, Brian McGinnis, Gavin Zimmerman &
Natalie Kleensang. After the project was sent into
campaign mode, when it was referred to a vote, the
committee gained additional community members

including; Marcy Moser, Nick Moser,
Dan Specht, Pauline Ackland and
Pauline Rhoades. The committee
also hired, campaign manager, Ellie
Highstreet of Highstreet, LLC who
led the campaign to a landslide win
with 66% of the vote.
The committee not only ensured
that the project passed, but
this group of individuals raised
more than $2.4 million dollars in
private donations to put towards
the project. These funds were
raised through some very creative
methods which provided them with not only
donations, but also invaluable awareness and
support.
One of those initiatives included the DIY
Radiothon, which raised over $120,000 in one day
through the partnership with of all the local media
outlets including the Yankton Daily Press & Dakota,
Yankton County Observer, Star Communications,
Riverfront Broadcasting and WNAX.
Another creative effort was the DIY Penny Drive,
this program was facilitated through a partnership
with the Yankton Schools, including the Yankton
School District and Sacred Heart schools. The
students were asked to collect spare change and
turn in each week. The top three classes in each
elementary school would be treated to a class
party. The top high school class and the top
middle school class would be treated to a private
pool party at the new facility. The committee
tracked the amount raised each week and posted
fun infographics to keep the excitement going. The
DIY committee visited each school and attended a
school assembly to announce the winners and take
photos of the winning classes. The Penney Drive
was successful in securing over $12,600 as well as
the excitement and support of most of Yankton’s
youth.
The committee was also extremely busy
participating in or organizing more than 40 events
and four local parades. These events included
things like the free popcorn night at a Bucks football
game, Topics on Tap events at local pubs, Q&A
presentations for local service organizations and
The Center, the Open House at Memorial Pool and
several community forums. The group participated
in countless interviews for local radio stations,
newspapers and regional television stations.
They purchased radio
advertising, newspaper
ads, ran a door-to-door
campaign, a direct mail
program, spent hours upon
hours calling community
members on the phone, ran
a social media campaign
that generated more than
750,000 impressions from
July - December, 2018 along
with many more tactics. As
mentioned earlier, it was
next to impossible to live

committee was up to.
The project even gained the attention of former
resident, and former Sioux Falls Mayor, Mike
Heuther, who generously contributed $1 million
dollars from the Mike, Cindy and Kylie Huether
Family Foundation.
The project was successful in securing a new
aquatic center which will offer a unique and state
of the art aquatic experience for generations to
come, but it was also successful in showcasing what
our community can accomplish when we all work
together. This was a daunting project to take on,
but the Dive In Yankton committee did not shy away
from adversity, and when they were presented with
set backs they just dug in deeper, pushed harder
and fought for the project they believed in.
Dive In Yankton is still accepting donations for the
project, if you would like to make a contribution you
can drop off contributions or mail to: Yankton Area
Chamber of Commerce at 803 E 4th Street, Yankton,
SD 57078. If you have questions, you can contact DIY
